How much of a difference does LeBron James make on the Warriors?
The Golden State Warriors are looking to maximize the final years of Steph Curry as they try to add at least one more championship banner to the rafters.
The Warriors haven't been competitive since winning the title in 2022, failing to get out of the first round since then, and outright missing the playoffs this past season. The team was on track to compete until an ACL injury to Jimmy Butler in January and a knee injury to Curry in February derailed the season.
Now, the Warriors have decisions to make in the offseason as they have a lottery pick and Butler's expiring contract to potentially add another star next to Curry.
The Warriors have been linked to LeBron James, who is expected to return for his 24th season, but is an unrestricted free agent, giving him control over his next destination.
LeBron James To Golden State Rumors
Curry will reportedly meet with LeBron at some point in the offseason to sell him on the idea of coming to the Bay to chase one more championship.
Though they battled in four straight NBA Finals a decade ago, there is a lot of mutual respect between LeBron and Curry. Their side-by-side talents were put on display at the Paris Olympics when they won a Gold medal together.
But would it be enough to win an NBA championship together?
Jake Fischer wrote in his newsletter, writing, “Staying with the Lakers is widely believed to be his preferred choice because he is so entrenched in Los Angeles now after eight seasons with the purple and gold. Yet league sources maintain that Golden State remains legitimately interested in adding LeBron to their Stephen Curry/Jimmy Butler/Draymond Green core coached by Steve Kerr ... with the pitch presumed to include the idea that LeBron could commute from Los Angeles to some TBD degree without having to move his family.”
Could The Warriors Contend?
The short answer is yes.
Curry, James, and Green are good enough to put the Warriors into the Western Conference playoffs, assuming the team stays healthy. If they are able to keep Butler and he returns by the end of the season, that solidifies their status even further.
Having the number 11 overall pick could go a long way in adding another star who will be ready for the start of the season, though Butler's contract would have to be attached.
Once a team is in the playoffs, anything can happen. One injury to a star player on another team, and the Warriors all of a sudden have a cleaner path to the Conference Finals.
The goal for any team looking to contend should be to improve and hope to catch some breaks, because no team wins without a break or two. Adding LeBron accomplishes improving. They just need to catch some breaks.
