The Warriors may choose to pursue LeBron James in free agency as a short-term piece.

It's clear that the current era of Golden State Warriors basketball is nearing its end. Draymond Green and Stephen Curry's days with the franchise are numbered, and Steve Kerr was just recently signed to a two-year extension.

The team will be without Moses Moody and Jimmy Butler III for much of the 2026-2027 season, and if they want to remain competitive for Curry and Green's last years with the team, roster moves will have to be made this summer.

One move brought up by Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report that could put them atop multiple teams in the Western Conference is signing LeBron James in free agency. While James is 41 years old, he can still contribute to the Warriors at a high level.

In 2025-2026, LeBron James averaged 20.9 points per game, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists. He was relatively durable as well, playing 60 regular-season games and all 10 playoff games with the Lakers.

Does LeBron Fit With Golden State?

Off the court, LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Draymond Green have good relationships. Curry and James were part of the 2024 Olympic Gold Medal Team, and the two showed they can coexist and find success.

In the past, James has also expressed interest in playing with Stephen Curry, and this summer, he can turn that into a reality.

Considering the Warriors need to replace Butler III and find someone to fill the small forward role for them this season, this can be a good fit for both parties. It is clear LeBron will not play in the NBA much longer after next season, and there are questions about whether or not Draymond Green and Stephen Curry will as well.

This could be a situation where this is the Warriors' last gasp at achieving any sort of success during the postseason, and that could be the selling point for LeBron James. Curry, Green, and James are all older, and there is a slim chance they will play at least 70 games each, but they have an advantage during the playoffs.

Between the three of them, is a combined 12 NBA Championships, and their experience could propel them to a deep playoff run. The Western Conference is filled with veteran teams ready to compete for a championship, but none of them would have the pedigree of a Warriors team with LeBron James.

If this move is made, keeping Kristaps Porzingis or Al Horford will need to be a priority. Both big men have championship experience and can still contribute to winning thanks to their spacing.

For this to work, the supporting cast will have to hold up their end of the load, but the Warriors with LeBron could be a surprising team as long as they get into the postseason.
