Draymond Green enters the season on an expiring contract but says he is focused on playing well rather than worrying about what comes next.

Draymond Green knows his future with the Golden State Warriors remains unsettled beyond this season. He is choosing to spend his attention on the basketball ahead of him.

At media day, Green acknowledged his one-year contract and explained that worrying about his future last season consumed time and energy he does not want to spend again.

“We’ll see what happens,” Green said. “But I don’t really think too much of it, honestly.”

Green returned to Golden State on a one-year, $27.7 million deal this summer. The agreement keeps him with the franchise for his 15th season, but leaves another decision approaching in 2027.

A familiar partnership, an unresolved future

The contract question carries significance because of Green’s history with Stephen Curry. Their partnership helped produce four NBA championships, and Green remains an important part of how Golden State operates on both ends.

He will turn 37 in March, making his next agreement a decision about both his remaining production and the team’s direction. Jimmy Butler’s contract also expires after this season, creating additional uncertainty around the veteran group.

Curry, meanwhile, recently agreed to a two-year, $116 million extension. Asked about the possibility that Curry’s decision to accept less money could help retain him, Green avoided assuming the arrangement was specifically designed for his benefit.

That leaves several questions open. What role will Green be able to fill after another full season? How much will the Warriors be willing to commit to that role? What other needs will compete for the same resources?

None of those answers can be settled simply by pointing to the championships he helped win. The team has to evaluate the basketball it expects to receive next.

This season gives Green something concrete to influence

Green’s immediate responsibilities include helping rookie Yaxel Lendeborg adjust to the NBA. At media day, he emphasized encouraging the newcomer to stay aggressive rather than overthink opportunities to score.

That is a useful example of how a veteran can contribute beyond his own possessions. Helping a young teammate recognize an opening can improve the offense without requiring Green to take the shot himself.

His own execution will matter just as much. Defensive communication is most valuable when it leads to timely rotations and completed stops. Playmaking needs to produce good opportunities while limiting careless possessions.

The contract discussion will naturally follow his performances, particularly if the Warriors must decide how much of their veteran foundation to retain. A productive season would give both sides more reason to continue the relationship.

For now, his stated approach is to focus on playing well and helping the team have a successful year. That gives him a daily assignment he can influence while the larger roster decisions remain with Golden State.

Green has another season with the Warriors secured. Whether that partnership extends further remains unresolved.
