Steve Kerr has stopped short of guaranteeing Yaxel Lendeborg a starting spot, but his latest response suggests the rookie is close.

Yaxel Lendeborg is approaching his first NBA regular season with a chance to earn significant responsibility immediately.

Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr indicated that the rookie is trending toward a starting role when asked about his status ahead of the season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers.

“It’s looking that way, for sure,” Kerr said in a video reported by Joseph Dycus.

Kerr did not formally guarantee the position, leaving a distinction between the direction Golden State is heading and an announced starting lineup. Still, his response offered a clear indication of where Lendeborg stands as the preseason winds down.

A Role That Requires Quick Decisions

Starting alongside Curry would place a premium on Lendeborg’s ability to contribute without holding the ball.

Golden State’s offense asks players to recognize openings quickly. A defender looking toward Curry can leave space for a cut. An aggressive trap can create an opportunity for a teammate to catch the ball and make the next pass.

Lendeborg would not need to control possessions to become valuable in those situations. Screening with purpose, moving into available space and keeping the ball moving can help the Warriors turn defensive attention on Curry into productive offense.

The challenge is maintaining that decision-making speed against regular-season defenses. Opponents will study his tendencies, adjust their coverage and test whether he can make the same reads under greater pressure.

A starting assignment would give him immediate experience with those demands, while also placing him alongside veterans who understand the offense.

His ability to respond to mistakes will matter, too. A missed read cannot carry into the next defensive possession, particularly when the opponent is already moving in transition.

Starting Would Be an Opportunity to Build On

Kerr’s response should be viewed as an encouraging evaluation rather than a guarantee of a season-long role.

Coaches can change lineups based on health, matchups and performance. Earning the first start would be an important step, but remaining effective throughout the schedule would require continued improvement.

The defensive side will be especially important. A rookie can make useful offensive plays and still lose minutes if missed assignments repeatedly force teammates to compensate.

Rebounding, communication and getting back in transition are areas where Lendeborg can help establish trust even when his shot is not falling.

For Golden State, the appeal is having another player who can contribute around its established stars without needing the offense redesigned for him.

Kerr has left himself room to make a final decision. His latest answer nevertheless suggests Lendeborg has moved beyond simply competing for rotation minutes and positioned himself for a place in the opening lineup.
