Yaxel Lendeborg is already looking forward to testing his defensive versatility against some of the NBA’s most accomplished and challenging scorers.

Yaxel Lendeborg has yet to play his first regular-season game for the Golden State Warriors, but the rookie is already thinking about the stars he wants to defend.

Lendeborg named Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo when discussing the most anticipated matchups on his schedule. He also included fellow young players Cooper Flagg and AJ Dybantsa.

“I would love to see our matchup against Kevin Durant, just guarding him-wise,” Lendeborg said. “He’s a very skillful guy. Kyrie, LeBron, Giannis, those guys. And I’ve already spoken about Cooper Flagg and AJ, and those guys. All because they’re all similar to my height besides Kyrie and, you know, very fluid, so very excited about those.”

The range of players Lendeborg mentioned reveals plenty about the confidence he has in his defensive versatility.

Lendeborg Welcomes Difficult Assignments

Durant, James and Antetokounmpo present completely different challenges despite possessing uncommon size and fluidity.

Durant can shoot over almost any defender. James combines strength, vision and downhill power, while Antetokounmpo overwhelms opponents around the basket. Irving is the clear size exception, but his ballhandling and change of direction would test Lendeborg’s ability to defend quicker guards.

Lendeborg should not be expected to stop any of them by himself, especially during his rookie season. The important part is that he wants those assignments instead of avoiding them.

The Warriors selected the 6-foot-9, 250-pound forward with the No. 11 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. He then helped Golden State win the NBA Summer League championship, recording 21 points, 10 rebounds and two steals in the title game.

Summer League success does not guarantee an immediate NBA impact, but Lendeborg demonstrated the rebounding, physicality and all-around activity that could earn him minutes under Steve Kerr.

Warriors Need His Defensive Versatility

Golden State’s veteran core will require support from younger players if the team expects to survive another demanding Western Conference season.

Lendeborg’s willingness to defend multiple positions could make him especially valuable. Kerr could deploy him alongside Draymond Green in switchable defensive groups or use him as an energetic forward next to a more offensive-minded lineup.

His references to Flagg and Dybantsa are also notable. Those matchups could become recurring measuring sticks as all three players develop within the league’s next generation.

Lendeborg will experience difficult moments against the stars he named. Every rookie does, and elite scorers have spent years learning how to exploit inexperienced defenders.

Nevertheless, his mentality should excite the Warriors. Lendeborg is not entering his first season hoping to remain unnoticed. He wants to discover immediately whether his defensive tools can translate against the league’s best.

That confidence, combined with his size and versatility, could help him carve out a meaningful role much sooner than expected.
