The Washington Wizards are set for the first of three back to back games to end the regular season when they stay out west to take on the Los Angeles Lakers late on Monday night.
This marks the second and final meeting between the two teams after the Lakers secured a 31 point win back on Jan. 30 in the Capital One Arena.
Washington will also look for its first win against the Lakers since March 19, 2022, the game LeBron James passed Karl Malone for second on the NBA all time scoring list.
As for Washington, it's been a mixed bag of results during the road trip after opening with a 32 point loss against the New York Knicks, the second 30-plus point loss against them in 2026, before ending the NBA's longest losing streak with a 23 point win against the Utah Jazz ending a 16 game slide. Washington followed it up with a competitive five point loss against the Stephen Curry-less Warriors before being blown out against Portland on Sunday night in an eventual 35 point loss.
How Washington responds against one of the league's best teams in the playoff hunt will be the latest humility test for a short-handed team looking to find signs of optimism over the final stretch of games. Washington entered Sunday night with multiple key absences including Kyshawn George, while Anthony Davis and Trae Young remain sidelined with the team patient in the recovery. Bilal Coulibaly was able to return for Sunday's loss, but whether Bub Carrington will be available on Monday night is a question mark after exiting against the Trail Blazers due to muscle cramps. But Washington won't be the only one with a key absence.
Lakers guard Luka Doncic will be sidelined against Washington as he serves a one game suspension after picking up his 16th technical foul of the regular season. He's one of two guards inactive for Los Angeles with veteran Marcus Smart set to miss his fourth consecutive game due to a right ankle contusion. Rookie forward Adou Thiero, set to miss his third consecutive game, is also ruled out as he battles left knee soreness.
Monday also marks the final game in a five game road trip with the Wizards set to return home to face the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday. Washington will look to avoid a season sweep against Philadelphia for the second time in three seasons.
