The Washington Wizards have won consecutive games for the first time since Dec 31 - Jan 2 after their 119-109 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks, Thursday night at Capital One Arena in Washington D.C.
Washington had defeated the Portland Trail Blazers, 115-111 on Tuesday night which snapped their nine game losing streak.
Washington's organization held a "John Wall Celebration Night" for this game, as the first 15,000 fans in attendance received a John Wall bobblehead.
Safe to say the D.C. faithful showed up and showed out for their franchise legend, but the players did too.
Washington was in the drivers seat for a vast majority of tonights contest, besides a late 4th quarter spurt by Milwaukee to cut the lead to two.
However, rising stars Kyshawn George and Alex Sarr were committed to walk out of tonight's game with a victory, and that is exactly what they did.
© Daniel Kucin Jr.-Imagn ImagesGeorge had a game-high of 23 points (10/24 FG), while hauling in five rebounds and dishing out five assists. George has taken initiative as the lead ball handler and late game shot-taker for Washington ever since the departure of veteran guard CJ McCollum. George has passed that test with flying colors as he scored eight of his 23 points in the fourth quarter. George's recent play has garnered the attention of NBA fans and players.
Sarr was a force in the paint tonight, scoring 16 points while snagging a career-high 17 rebounds, with seven of them being on the offensive glass. Sarr had a challenge cut out for him tonight in Myles Turner, but he did not back down, blocking a few of Turner's shots in the second half.
Third year wing Bilal Coulibaly had another strong night, as he used his length and athleticism to harass Milwaukee's ball handlers. Coulibaly is buying into his role as a defensive menace for Washington, as he has racked up two blocks and two steals in consecutive games while having a positive +/- while on the court.
Washington's defense has been impressive as of late. The young core of Sarr, Coulibaly and George use their quickness to get stops and leak out in transition, leading to fast break dunks like this:
Washington has relied a ton on Justin Champagnie, and rookies Will Riley and Jamir Watkins late in the game due to their defensive versatility. You would have thought coming into the season that Champagnie, Riley and Watkins would have minimal production for Washington -- that simply is not the case.
That trio combined for a +19 +/- tonight for Washington, further displaying their impact defensively when on the court.
In what was a near perfect night for Wizards fans became sour when rookie guard Tre Johnson III left the game in the second quarter with an ankle injury. Johnson was attempting a step-back jump shot when former Wizard Ryan Rollins entered his landing zone, resulting in Johnson to twist his ankle.
The good news is that Washington's medical staff doesn't believe for the injury to be a long-term one. The best case scenario is that Johnson is considered day-to-day where he could return as soon as early next week.
Washington Wizards basketball has been on the slow rise for quite some time now, but tonight's performance was an example of how good this team can be in the near future.
Fans are back, vibes are back, and the Washington Wizards may be back.
Washington is set to host Lebron James and the Los Angeles Lakers tomorrow at 7:00 PM ET.
