Washington Wizards guard Jamir Watkins suffers potentially season ending ACL tear
The injury bug has hit the team again this summer after the Washington Wizards announced that Jamir Watkins suffered a torn left ACL in summer league, and could potentially miss the entire 2026-27 season.
Watkins, who is currently on a two-way contract, suffered the ACL tear during Washington's summer league opener against the Utah Jazz where he was tasked with the defensive assignment of guarding number two overall pick Darryn Peterson.
Watkins underwent a successful surgery on his left knee earlier today, which is encouraging to hear considering ACL tears could be career ending or altering.
While Watkins is expected to miss a majority of the regular season, doctors haven't ruled out the possibility of him suiting up for Washington towards the backend of the season.
Brian Fluharty-Imagn ImagesWatkins (25) was drafted with the 43rd overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft out of Florida State University, where he was known for his two-way ability and high motor.
Throughout his rookie year, Watkins displayed his high motor and two-way ability averaging 7.4 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 1.3 APG and 1.6 stocks per game on 44.6% FG% and 29.7% from beyond the arc.
Although Watkins wasn't the most efficient scorer last season, his elite on ball defense was put on full display as he would often guard the opposing teams' best player. Watkins took the defensive assignment of guarding Darryn Peterson in the highly anticipated summer league opener, where he did a great job of keeping the number two overall pick in check.
Watkins played a massive role in shutting down Peterson, as he scored 24 points on 6/18 FG, 2/7 3FG with eight turnovers.
Unfortunately, Washington will have to be without one of their better perimeter defenders for a majority of the regular season.
ACL tears typically take 6-12 months of recovery, but for professional athletes (especially basketball players), the rehabilitation process may take even longer due to how essential healthy knees are in the sport.
This injury comes at a terrible time for Watkins, as he was expected to build upon a strong rookie season and compete for minutes on a hopeful playoff team.
Luckily for Washington, they have one of the deepest rosters in the league and should be able to carry their weight fine without Watkins. Players like Bilal Coulibaly, Cam Whitmore and Khris Middleton will now be more depended on to play strong defense and contribute in the way Watkins has.
The road to recovery will be long and grueling for Watkins, but there's no denying that he can be an impact player on both sides of the ball when healthy.
