The Washington Wizards assigned rookie forward Will Riley to the Capital City Go-Go this morning, the team announced.
Riley, 19, returns for his second stint in the G-League, where he averaged 21 points and 4 assists in two games.
Riley’s first trip to Anacostia prompted a 25-point explosion in his first contest. The young forward, who possesses guard-like skills, put up 7 assists in the aforementioned game.
General manager Will Dawkins told the Sports Junkies in an interview on November 18th they sent Riley down to get reps on the ball, which were few and far between at the NBA level. Utilizing the G-League has been a point of emphasis after general manager Will Dawkins hinted at such last month.
“I anticipate us using the Go-Go a little bit more, especially early on in the season, probably more so with the depth that we’ll see at the wing spot [barring injuries],” Dawkins said in October.
Riley has flashed as a playmaker at both levels. His second preseason game featured a 7 assist from Riley.
Dawkins said they were interested in observing his playmaking ability.
“It was good to get a feel of what it’s like, like a live action game,” Riley said last month after making his NBA debut. “It’s been a while since summer league. Obviously got hurt with the thumb, so it was a good feel.”
Since returning to the NBA roster, Riley has only checked into 4 games. Only 2 of those saw him play 9 or more minutes, as he saw fourth quarter minutes in blowout losses to Indiana and Toronto.
Overall, Riley averages 6.8 minutes per game in the regular season.
Riley was selected with the 21st overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, one of two first-round picks for the Wizards this offseason, though rookie Tre Johnson is out indefinitely with a left hip flexor strain.
“We were very fortunate with our grassroots guys,” Will Dawkins said after the draft in June. "They do a great job of seeing them early. When Will was playing with Team Canada, when he was playing EYBL, he had the ball in his hands, and you could see him create. And once Illinois had those injuries midway through the season, they kind of put the ball in his hands and you got to see him attack and grow. And he shot and made more plays [in] the second half of the season. He’s someone that’s still growing, is still young, his growth plates are still open. The future is pretty bright for him."
The Go-Go play today at Care First Arena in Washington D.C. at 2:00 p.m., so it’s fair to assume Riley will get those reps today.
The Wizards dropped back in the loss column on Friday night after falling to Indiana, 119-86, in a game featuring a pair of two-win teams. Washington is back in action tomorrow at home against the Milwaukee Bucks for a 7 PM tipoff, the first of four home games over the next 11 days.
