A major domino in the Washington Wizards' offseason plans materialized on Wednesday night with Trae Young now entering free agency
The latest twist in the growing Trae Young saga took another turn on Wednesday night after news broke that the point guard plans to decline his upcoming $48.97 million player option with the Washington Wizards, officially making him an unrestricted free agent ahead of the start of free agency.
Young's extension deadline was set for this upcoming Tuesday, June 23, one of two players with a player-option deadline on the roster as D'Angelo Russell has a decision to make despite not arriving in Washington after being traded from Dallas.
Yet for Young, it marks a possible changed tune in the next stage of his career given the expectation since he arrived in Washington has been that the two sides will agree to a contract extension. Yet that may still be a realistic possibility as Marc Spears of ESPN reported that the Wizards "remain the front runner for the four-time All Star" with his pursuit now set to extend into the summer, but multiple teams could be in play. Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints also reported that Young is doing so with "the intention of negotiating a long-term extension with the Wizards."
Young is eligible to sign a near four year, $213 million contract in free agency that jumps to five years at $288 million if an extension with Washington materializes.
The news also comes hours after a report emerged that Young wants to stay with the Wizards for a "long time", but he also found himself back in the trade discussion earlier this week after a report pointed to the Wizards point guard as a backup "big fish" target for the Miami Heat with both Kawhi Leonard and Ja Morant reportedly on their radar.
Could Washington end up retaining the star point guard nearly six months after acquiring him in exchange for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert? It's possible, but the price tag just went up after drawing additional interest. Though it has died down over the last three weeks, whether this impacts the Anthony Davis saga will be another storyline to watch as the front office looks to put the pieces together for what was initially expected to be a bounceback 2026-27 season with postseason aspirations.
After being sidelined from injuries suffered while with the Hawks, Young eventually made his debut before he appeared in five games for the Wizards near the end of the 2025-26, averaging 15.2 points and eight assists while shooting nearly 60% from the field and 43% from three while on a minutes restriction.
In addition to renewed efforts to retain Young, Washington has a pivotal decision ahead of them with the 2026 NBA Draft also set to kick off next Tuesday with AJ Dybantsa still the projected top overall pick. With attention now focused on where Young will play in 2026-27, whether the potential path to a starting point guard role now changes the tune around former Kansas point guard Darryn Peterson will now emerge into a key storyline over the next five days.
