Monumental Sports and Entertainment announced upgrades to Capital One Arena on Tuesday

The Washington Wizards will get a chance to soak in a new arena over the next 12 months through several announced upgrades after Monumental Sports and Entertainment announced updates to the future of Capital One Arena on Tuesday, both for naming rights and updated renderings of the arena.

Capital One Arena will also remain the name for the foreseeable future after announcing a 20-year naming rights extension with Monumental Sports and Entertainment, extending their partnership that began almost nine years ago to the day. The decision to remain in Penn Quarter instead of moving to Virginia also added 200,000 new square feet in Monumental's new deal with the city after absorbing the space between 7th Street and 6th Street NW, per Axion.

With a construction projected expected to eclipse one billion dollars, Monumental Sports and Entertainment also shared updated renderings of the exterior and upgraded District Level (100 level concourse) and Terrace Level (400 level concourse). The renovations for both concourses are expected to be completed prior to the start of the 2026-27 regular season, while the exterior renovations will be completed prior to the start of the 2027-28 regular season.

Improving the efficiency for the stadium's entrance was also paramount to Monumental president of business operations Jim Van Stone after he told Axios, "we want people to get from the street to their seat as quickly as possible."

The updated arena is also expected to feature a "premium culinary and beverage program" for fans with either 14 or 15 kitchens compared to the three currently used, along with expanded entrances and gathering spaces within the arena complex. The number of bathrooms will also grow by 30%, while the cardholder entrance to the arena will also be relocated to F street. The Wizards previously announced the Visibowl design for the arena, which was ultimately named a finalist in the Experimental and Conceptual Design category by the Fast Company Innovation by Design Awards in 2025.

Updated renderings include graphics featuring both AJ Dybantsa and Alex Sarr on big screens along the concourse with the Visibowl featuring an immersive video wall that displays the ongoing game.

The updated fan experience coupled with improved roster ahead of the 2026-27 could elevate the Wizards' fan attendance in the years ahead, a welcomed development after the franchise ranked among the bottom five teams across the NBA in attendance in each of the last three seasons. With a chance to turn the page and return to competitive basketball, Monumental Sports and Entertainment CEO Ted Leonsis will look to welcome the next era of Wizards basketball with an upgraded fan experience inside The District.
