The Washington Wizards will now have two roster spots, along with a two-way spot, to fill after jumping in on an NBA trade on Wednesday night
With all the talk about how to fill one last roster spot, the Washington Wizards will now have multiple to fill ahead of the 2026-27 regular season after jumping in on a growing trade across the NBA.
The Wizards are set to acquire Tre Mann, a 2027 second round pick from the Los Angeles Clippers and cash. In exchange, Washington will send a pair of DMV natives away with Cam Whitmore now headed to the Cleveland Cavaliers, while Julian Reese will be waived off his two-way deal and is headed to the Denver Nuggets.
Per Josh Robbins, the second round pick received will be the second-most favorable among A) Golden State and Phoenix, B) the most favorable of Houston, Indiana, Miami and Oklahoma City, C) Philadelphia.
The departure of Whitmore comes after his lone season back with his hometown franchise ended in injury after blood clots limited him to 21 games, averaging 9.2 points and 2.8 rebounds in nearly 17 minutes per game. Yet what his role would materialize into in year two with the Wizards and year four in the NBA was unclear alongside a much more competitive wing rotation in 2026-27, making a trade a realistic possibility. Whitmore also joined Bilal Coulibaly last month with their rookie extension window now opened.
For Reese, his rookie season proved to be the lone bright spot to a 2025-26 regular season that ended with just 17 wins. Reese tallied 18 points and 20 rebounds in his third NBA game, what proved to be the first of five double-doubles. After initially starting his rookie season with the Toronto G League affiliate, Reese averaged 11.8 points and 10.5 rebounds in 30.9 minutes through just ten starts and 13 games.
Tre Mann, 25, returns to the Southeast Division after spending the last two full seasons with the Charlotte Hornets. After initially being drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2021 NBA Draft where he spent the first two seasons in a gradually reduced role, Mann was shipped ahead of the 2024 trade deadline to the Charlotte Hornets where he inked a three year deal worth $24 million.
After ending the 2023-24 regular season on a high note, Mann averaged a career high 14.1 points while shooting 43.5% from the field through 13 games before suffering a back disc herniation that sidelined him for the remainder of the 2024-25 regular season. He then returned to appear in 53 games, starting in one, while averaging five points in 2025-26.
The Wizards now have two roster spots, along with a two way spot, to fill with uncertainty what comes next now that the Denver Nuggets are viewed as most likely to sign DeMar DeRozan.
