The Washington Wizards announced starting center Alex Sarr suffered an offseason injury and has undergone surgery

While all the attention has been centered on the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft with the first round just eight days away, bad news emerged for the Washington Wizards on Monday afternoon with one starter now sidelined for potentially the remainder of the offseason.

The Wizards announced that forward/center Alex Sarr underwent a successful surgery to repair a fracture in his right foot, an injury suffered during an offseason workout. The injury reportedly occurred during a contact play last week, per Shams Charania of ESPN, while the Wizards announced that Sarr is expected to make a "full recovery ahead of the 2026-27 regular season." The Wizards also announced that Dr. Martin J. O'Malley at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) performed the surgery.

Yet it marks a significant blow for Sarr, who was limited to just 48 games in his second season in the NBA after battling through injuries to his toe, adductor, hamstring, calf and ankle. When he was on the floor, Sarr was more than productive after making a case through the first half of the regular season as the team's most improved player.

Sarr finished the regular season averaging two blocks and ranked behind Victor Wembanyama for much of the regular season in the category. He also improved virtually every major statistical category after averaging 16.3 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists while shooting 48.2% from the field and 33.3% from three. Yet Sarr also returned to the floor on a minutes restriction when he was available during the second half of the season, though he was available to play in all but one of the five games that Trae Young suited up in to offer a glimpse into his Wizards era.

Sarr joined the organization after becoming the second pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, while he has remained a key part of the foundation alongside Kyshawn George, Will Riley, Tre Johnson and Bilal Coulibaly among others. The French center is also slated to step into a much different role in his third season given he will team up with ten-time All Star, Anthony Davis, to lock down the frontcourt while looking to be the primary benefactor with Trae Young handling primary point guard duties.

Sarr finished fourth in the Rookie of the Year voting behind Stephon Castle, Zaccharie Risacher and Jaylen Wells to end the 2024-25 season after he averaged 13 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in just over 27 minutes per game.
