The Washington Wizards may have had a decision to make, but the noise around Anthony Davis may now begin to die down

A resolution surrounding Anthony Davis and the Washington Wizards has seemingly materialized after a 36 hour period filled with news and speculation.

As expected, the Wizards have no interest in trading the ten-time All Star just months after acquiring him via trade with the Dallas Mavericks. The news grew louder through Tuesday after Brian Windhorst of ESPN reported he "didn't have data" that suggested a trade was likely, while Marc Spears reported hours later that the Wizards have no interest in trading Davis.

It also comes as little surprise that the Wizards are reluctant to move on from the veteran piece who serves as a perfect complement to Alex Sarr. Add in the fact that any trade involving Davis to Golden State, the team at the forefront of all the rumors, would include the Wizards absorbing an injured, 37 year old Jimmy Butler who remains unavailable into 2027 while on a near $57 million deal, there was seemingly little incentive for the Wizards to be on board with the move.

Golden State reportedly eyed Davis as a bargaining chip in their hopeful pursuit of veteran LeBron James in free agency, giving the former Laker duo a chance to reunite once again. Draymond Green opting out of his player option added credence that the Warriors could make an aggressive run at putting together a superteam alongside Steph Curry, but in the end, all signs point to Washington being able to hang onto Davis at least into the start of 2026-27.

The news comes after months of back and forth as to whether the ten-time All Star truly wanted to be in Washington. In the days after the deal to Washington was first announced, Davis admitted in multiple TV interviews that he is looking to compete for championships and questioned how quickly Washington can become a competitive team. While Davis would have been a key part of those rebuild efforts amid hopes of returning to the postseason, general manager Will Dawkins remained consistent ever since the trade that Davis was a key part of the team's future.

Whether Davis was all-in was a continued question despite changing his tune in hopes of becoming a foundational piece on the Wizards' roster amid hopes of signing a max contract when the negotiating window begins on August 6. With trade rumors potentially quieting now, attention will soon shift to exactly what a possible framework for an extension could look like as Davis eyes long-term stability in the final stages of his career.
