While the inclusion of the Washington Wizards among teams most in need of landing the top overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, where they ranked was the bigger surprise.
The 2026 NBA Draft Lottery is officially days away with Washington Wizards fans anxiously awaiting the end result of a third season filled with blowout losses and limited roster availability.
The possibility of adding one of the top picks has fueled optimism about what could become of the makeup of the 2026-27 roster with a top five pick already secured after already hanging onto the top eight protected pick as general manager Will Dawkins hoped to do ahead of the 2025-26 season.
Washington enters the lottery with a 14% chance at securing the coveted number one pick, a 27.4% chance at securing a top two pick, a 40.1% chance at securing a top three pick along with a 47.9% chance to land the fifth pick, the worst that Washington can draw.
Optimism for a third full season under head coach Brian Keefe is fueled by the pair of veteran additions in Anthony Davis and Trae Young coupled with the several young pieces, yet the prize for the 17-win season has been centered around the chances of landing the top overall pick in what is expected to be a loaded draft class.
Bleacher Report included the Wizards among the teams most in need of landing the top overall pick, yet they rounded out the top five behind the Memphis Grizzlies, Chicago Bulls, Brooklyn Nets and Sacramento Kings. The reason? The veteran presence now leading the Wizards roster.
The question mark is what other roster moves the Wizards will make beyond the NBA Draft given the limited roster flexibility amid 13 players currently under contract for next season along with a handful of options, including a near $6 million player option for D'Angelo Russell. Washington will also be eligible to begin contract extensions with Bilal Coulibaly this summer, the first of the rookies to enter that phase of his career.
Still, the chance to pair someone like AJ Dybantsa, Caleb Wilson or Darryn Peterson to the roster could be what elevates the roster from a possible play-in contender to playoff sleeper in the Eastern Conference next season.
"While the Wizards aren't quite barren of potential best-player-of-the-future options, the absence of an undeniable answer is nothing if not unsettling given how long they've been trying to find one," Favale added.
