The official contract extension window opens for veteran Anthony Davis this week, but will it come to fruition immediately?
The clock is ticking for the window to open for maybe the biggest decision of the offseason as the Washington Wizards have to make a decision regarding veteran forward Anthony Davis' future with the organization. Yes, that decision will come months before the ten-time All Star will actually wear a Wizards uniform and after months of back-and-forth about whether Davis wanted to remain with the organization -- even as general manager Will Dawkins made clear Davis is part of the team's vision. While Thursday, Aug. 6 marks the first day that Davis will be eligible to sign a new four-year deal worth up to $275 million, whether a resolution comes on day one -- or soon -- is its own question mark.
Ben Standig of Last Man Standig reported on Monday that the belief is "both sides agree to wait" prior to Anthony Davis finalizing an extension. The other question is what the numbers ultimately materialize into after reports that Davis, expectedly and understandably, is eyeing the max deal in what could be his final major NBA contract given the 33 year old is preparing for his 15th NBA season.
Standig cautioned that the Wizards are unlikely to agree to a "resolution coming close to [four] for $275 million territory." What the number and contract length ultimately materialize into will be another question, especially after Trae Young's four year deal worth roughly $212 million proved to be vastly different from the initial three year, $120 million deal that was projected during the 2025-26 regular season.
Davis enters the next chapter of his career looking to silence questions about his lack of availability since leaving the Los Angeles Lakers in 2024-25 in exchange for Luka Doncic, yet his arrival in Washington could place him in an ideal fit on the floor. The veteran said previously in his NBA career that his best seasons have come when he plays the four, adding optimism to a pairing alongside Alex Sarr. The official, extended return of Trae Young adds one of the best point guards that Davis has played with in his career, making him a key part of the Wizards' rebuild efforts.
The veteran forward also isn't the only one currently in the midst of his extension window with both Cam Whitmore and Bilal Coulibaly roughly one month into the chance to finalize their futures with the organization. Yet all eyes are on Davis with the financial flexibility over the next two seasons to retain the impact addition for the foreseeable future and finally end the months of noise, speculation and rumors.
