Washington Wizards finalize the 2026-27 staff under Brian Keefe while hiring a college coach to lead the Capital City Go-Go

The Washington Wizards have finalized changes to the coaching staff for the upcoming 2026-27 season along with one coach heading back to the area to lead the Capital City Go-Go.

Assistant Adam Caporn has been announced as the Wizards' new lead assistant in 2026-27. Caporn, who has served on Keefe's staff over the past two seasons, has also served as the head coach of Australia's men's national team for the last ten years. He previously served as the head coach of the Nets' G League affiliate before being promoted to an assistant coach beginning in 2022-23.

The hire of Patrick Ewing as an assistant coach is also officially announced, marking his second stint with the organization after spending the past two seasons as an advisor to the New York Knicks. Ewing will be joined by a familiar face with Steve Clifford joining the organization as a coaching advisor. His role fills the vacancy left by David Vanterpool, who Josh Robbins of The Athletic reported is expected to move into a front office position within the franchise.

Vanterpool joined the coaching staff ahead of the 2023-24 after serving as an assistant with the Portland Trail Blazers for over a decade.

Washington has finalized the promotion of Cody Toppert to an assistant on Brian Keefe's staff, a deserving yet notable promotion in his career. Toppert spent the last three seasons as the head coach of the Capital City Go-Go, the Wizards' G League affiliate, where he went 85-65 (.567) record in his tenure with Capital City, leading the team to three-consecutive playoff appearances and two G League Showcases. He led the Go-Go to a franchise-record 31 wins in 2024-25 and coached 13 different players to NBA call-ups, per release.

To replace Toppert, the Wizards are turning to a sitting college basketball head coach as Tevon Saddler now heads back to the DMV. The official hire makes him the second-youngest head coach in the G League.

Saddler will arrive in Washington after a three year stint as the head coach at Nicholls State where he led the program to a 54-46 (38-22) career record and two 20-win seasons, along with finishing above .500 each year Saddler arrived at Nicholls State after serving as the director of player personnel at the University of Maryland during the 2022-23 season under then-head coach Kevin Willard, materializing into one of three staffers who departed for a head coaching job that offseason.

Washington also announced that TJ Sorrentine will serve as the head coach of the Summer League team, which begins this week. This marks Sorrentine's first time as head coach in Summer League while he served as an assistant at Brown for 16 seasons prior to joining Washington in 2024.

Brian Keefe was also previously set to return for his third season as permanent head coach, news that general manager Will Dawkins previously confirmed in his end of season comments. Keefe was first named interim head coach during the 2023-24 season after Wes Unseld Jr. was relieved of duties, but the team has struggled with success since then after owning a 35-129 overall record over the last two seasons.
