The Washington Wizards enter Thursday's home game against the Indiana Pacers short-handed with the All Star break officially complete. But while all eyes remain centered on the Wizards' tank efforts to complete the 2025-26 season, the team also provided a brief update regarding both Trae Young and Anthony Davis with both looking to make their debut with the team this season.
Washington announced that Trae Young will "ramp up his on-court activities" with an additional update to be provided in a week, the team announced on Thursday.
Anthony Davis remains sidelined with ligament damage in his left hand and was re-evaluated by Dr. Steven Shin of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, per the team. The Wizards announced that Davis is "progressing as expected" though has not yet been cleared for basketball activity. The team announced that Davis will also be re-evaluated in two weeks and "further updates will be provided as appropriate."
The news also comes one day after head coach Brian Keefe said neither Young nor Davis were cleared for contact coming out of the All Star break.
The update comes roughly one week after general manager Will Dawkins expressed optimism the two return to the floor this season before adding it is "highly likely" that Davis and Trae Young will play at some point this season.
"That's the goal. We want to see our guys together so we can build camaraderie and build some continuity towards the end of the season," Dawkins added.
It also comes after reports that Davis was expected to miss the rest of the 2025-26 season despite the team singing a much different tune just days later.
Davis, who averaged 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds and 1.7 blocks in per game in over 31 minutes with the Mavericks this season, suffered a hand injury on his non-shooting hand back on Jan. 8 with the initial expectation that he would be sidelined for six weeks, though Davis also elected against surgery in hopes of preserving his chance to return to the floor this season.
Washington, meanwhile, has remained patient with his recovery process with the front office gearing up for a bounce back 2026-27 season.
"That's a big appointment for us to kind of see where his progress is at. And after that, after the All Star break, he'll return to DC and be here with the team," Dawkins said after meeting with local media after the team announced the trade.
With Young arguably more likely to return to the court first, all eyes will be on how he meshes with the rest of the backcourt including Bub Carrington and Tre Johnson.
"Our roster is still going to be young, but I think it just enhances the strengths of our guys," head coach Brian Keefe said of Young. "[We] are going to put them in better positions to be successful. I think that's the most exciting part for all of us."
