The Washington Wizards were tabbed to be in the mix for the play-in in the Eastern Conference in 2026-27

The Washington Wizards are nearing the official start of game action with the preseason set to begin on Oct. 8 followed by the regular season opener on Oct. 21 with all questions about what level of success the organization is able to achieve in year three under head coach Brian Keefe.

ESPN pointed to the Wizards among the play-in teams alongside the Charlotte Hornets, which may be up for debate but also reflects the minimum expectation out of the upgraded roster in 2026-27.

While the New York Knicks were the lone Eastern Conference team listed in the 'championship favorite' tier, Washington found themselves placed behind the Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers, Miami Heat, Philadelphia Sixers and Toronto Raptors. Maybe all are an understandable hills that the Wizards will need to prove they can climb, in addition to the Atlanta Hawks and Orlando Magic, who were tabbed as 'solid Southeast squads' after reaching the first round of the 2025 playoffs.

Yet the Wizards and Hornets being looped into similar standing may be fitting even if the ceiling is viewed to be higher in Washington than Charlotte. The Hornets are one year removed from their first winning season since 2021-22 while the front office turned to turning the page to a new chapter in the organization after trading LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves and Miles Bridges to the Phoenix Suns, leaving Kon Knueppel as the focal point on the roster.

Yet maybe the bigger question is the grouping, which although has varied by national outlet, better reflects what the minimum expectations are for the upcoming regular season. For an organization that has not returned to postseason play since the 2020-21 season and struggled to consistently field a playoff contender since the John Wall - Bradley Beal era in the mid-2010s, whether the play-in is enough may be its own debate.

The Wizards have yet to formally announce a date for training camp while general manager Will Dawkins still has both a standard roster spot and two way spot to fill ahead of the regular season opener. Whether the Wizards wait for the start of preseason to analyze potential standouts to fill both spots remains to be seen. Yet the headliners remain clear with AJ Dybantsa set to make his debut alongside Trae Young, Anthony Davis, Alex Sarr and an upgraded rotation to round out the supporting cast. Whether it becomes enough to alter preseason expectations is what Keefe and the upgraded coaching staff looks to tackle starting in October.
