After amassing just 34 wins over the last two seasons, does Washington Wizards head coach Brian Keefe have something to prove in 2026-27?

After ESPN projected the Washington Wizards failing to eclipse 35 wins in 2026-27 despite the upgraded roster, it's clear there's something to prove for an organization that has struggled to put the on-court results together. Yet after a three year span featured just 50 wins, the team itself isn't the only one within the organization who has a chance to change the narrative this upcoming regular season.

There may be questions that sit outside of the organization that Brian Keefe can mitigate as he enters 2026-27 with a 43-160 record since taking over as interim head coach midway through the 2023-24 season, including a 35-129 record since the start of 2024-25. It's why Keefe ranked among the worst head coaches in the NBA after Sam Quinn of CBS Sports slotted Kings head coach Doug Christie as the league's worst coach in his preseason power rankings.

Quinn highlighted the 83 point game by Miami Heat center Bam Adebayo as part of the criticism surrounding the Wizards' head coach, though there's reason for pushback.

After general manager Will Dawkins and the front office prioritized the rebuild over the last three years before adding veteran talent to the top of the roster over the last ten months, the upcoming regular season marks arguably the first time that Keefe will have a chance to prioritize winning and competitive basketball.

That also includes an upgraded coaching staff with longtime NBA coach Steve Clifford arriving as a consultant, while Hall of Fame center Patrick Ewing departed the New York Knicks to join Keefe as an assistant along the bench. In addition to Adam Caporn stepping up as the lead assistant, the Wizards also promoted Cody Toppert to a bench coach after spending the last three seasons as the head coach of the Capital City Go-Go, amassing an 85-65 overall record during that span.

The Wizards, meanwhile, expressed continued support in its head coach after general manager Will Dawkins confirmed that Brian Keefe would return for a third season as permanent head coach, finally giving him a chance to showcase his coaching skills.

Washington has made improving defense a clear focus while Keefe and the rest of the roster have pointed to the multiple playmakers along the roster who can create on the offensive end of the floor. Time will tell whether it's enough for the Wizards to climb back into the postseason for the first time since 2020-21, but that's the task for Keefe to ace in a prove it season with the organization.
