With the top pick and a generational talent like AJ Dybantsa at stake, the Washington Wizards must choose a lucky charm to reverse a decade of lottery misfortune.
We are officially less than one week away from the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery, as it's set to take place on Sunday, May 10, at 3 P.M. ET on ABC.
The 2026 NBA Draft class is one of the more talented groups of the quarter century, headlined by potential stars in AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson and Cameron Boozer.
Luckily for the Washington Wizards, they're in a prime position to land the number one overall pick, as they finished the season with the league's worst record at 17-65. Unfortunately, Washington's lottery luck has been underwhelming over the past decade, as they've gotten a top three pick just once.
Washington hasn't had the number one overall pick since 2010 when they selected John Wall. Perhaps Washington needs some fresh luck in the form of a lottery representative, poising the question: Who should represent the Washington Wizards in the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery?
Zach Leonsis | © Brad Penner-Imagn ImagesWashington's highest draft selection in the past decade was 2024, where they landed the second overall pick and took French big man, Alex Sarr. Washington was represented by their very own former first round pick Bilal Coulibaly. Perhaps Coulibaly should represent Washington once more this time around?
What if Washington took a similar approach, and asked another one of their current players to represent them? Washington asked guard Bub Carrington to represent them at the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery. Unfortunately, Washington saw themselves slide down four picks, as they entered the lottery with the second best odds, but ending with the sixth overall pick.
If you want to know the last time Washington didn't ask a player to represent their team at the draft lottery, you'd have to go back to 2023 when Head Coach Wes Unseld Jr. was Washington's lottery representative. Unfortunately for Unseld Jr. and Washington, their Head Coach brought zero luck as they ended with the eighth pick. It's important to note that Unseld Jr. also represented Washington the year prior in 2022.
Washington has had minimal luck with their players and coaches acting as representatives, however, what if they asked a former player to represent them? What former Washington player is a better representative than franchise legend and former number one overall pick himself, John Wall?
Wall has served as a mentor and community leader in the Washington D.C. area since his retirement in 2025, as he even accepted a position to be Howard University's President of Basketball Operations. Wall also appeared on numerous broadcasts and videos during the regular season, and served as a mentor for rising stars Tre Johnson, Will Riley, Bub Carrington, Kyshawn George and others. It's evident that Wall is invested in Washington's young core and franchise direction.
Wall has continued to give back to the city that accepted him as a teenager, but what if he has a bit more to give back in the form of lottery luck?
I believe Wall should serve as Washington's NBA Draft Lottery representative on Sunday, where he can hopefully bring the number one overall pick back to Washington D.C.
