The Washington Wizards may not have a key piece available in the frontcourt with veteran forward Anthony Davis ruled questionable
After climbing back over .500, the Washington Wizards had an opportunity to make a statement in divisional play with two matchups against the Atlanta Hawks over the span of three days. Yet the other storyline was obvious given it marked the first time that Trae Young squared off against his former team, in addition to the first time that both CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert have suited back up inside Capital One Arena, only now coming out of the opposing tunnel. It ended with the Hawks getting the first laugh after a lackluster effort on the glass materialized into a 15 point loss for the Wizards.
Young admitted that Wednesday felt like a "regular day" despite preparing to go against his former team, but now will mark the next phase of the reunion with Young now set to suit up in Atlanta for the first time since being traded. While Young was inactive in the first meeting after taking in the celebration on the bench, Friday now marks a chance for the Wizards to get the last laugh with a chance to get even in the rematch.
Yet the Wizards will enter the rematch on the road with a question in the frontcourt after veteran forward Anthony Davis was ruled questionable with a right ankle sprain on the team's first injury report, released on Thursday.
Davis went down midway through the first quarter and came out of halftime with his ankle wrapped. He was then able to return to the game where he played nearly 14 minutes in the second half, while he went on to lead the team in both points and rebounds en route to his fourth double-double in a Wizards uniform. Davis also registered three blocks and three assists in nearly 30 minutes of playing time.
Davis ranks top 20 across the league in both points and rebounds per game through eight games, while he's shooting 50% from the field to begin his tenure with the organization.
The veteran forward is one of two new injury designations that the frontcourt is battling through after rookie Felix Okpara was ruled doubtful. Though no official injury accompanied the news, it marks a notable question for a Wizards' team to answer amid the team's ongoing rebounding struggles.
Following Friday night's road game against Atlanta, Washington will stay on the road to face the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday, marking a question whether the Wizards will have their leading scorer as they look to stay above .500.
