As Washington’s revamped roster eyes a playoff run, the high-flying wing must sacrifice isolation scoring for defensive grit to secure his spot in a crowded rotation.

For the first time in over half a decade, the Washington Wizards have playoff expectations. Led by Trae Young, Anthony Davis and first overall pick AJ Dybantsa, Washington has the potential to be a wrecking crew in the Eastern Conference for the foreseeable future.

While Washington is still an extremely young team, they have the veteran presence and experience needed to compete in the east for years to come. Players like Kyshawn George, Bilal Coulibaly, Will Riley and Tre Johnson will each play an instrumental role in Washington's future and current success, but there's one young wing that remains on the outside looking in.

When Washington traded two future second round picks and Saddiq Bey for Cam Whitmore in July of 2025, Washington was taking a swing on a DMV kid with a ton of offensive upside and untapped potential.

Whitmore (22), is a former five-star and first-round pick, but has struggled to carve out a consistent role in the NBA.

Last season, Whitmore appeared in only 21 games for Washington before suffering a right shoulder injury that would sideline him for the remainder of the season. However, Whitmore displayed his elite athleticism and scoring ability, averaging 9.2 PPG and 2.8 RPG on 45.6% FG.

Whitmore would often take the ball coast to coast and end the play with a thunderous dunk, but would also struggle to make the right play consistently on offense. Whitmore isn't known for his passing ability what so ever, and has been called the term "a ball hog" quite often throughout his career.

If Whitmore wants to carve out minutes on a stacked Washington roster, he has got to evolve his offensive game and become more of a team player rather than an isolation scorer. Players such as George, Riley, Coulibaly and Johnson are all expected to play big minutes next season because they thrive in their specific roles.

George is an all around contributor, Riley is a bench scoring engine, Coulibaly is an elite defender and Johnson is one of the best shooters in the league. Whitmore has yet to find a specific role yet in Washington, but who's to say he can't?

Whitmore is one of the most athletic players in the NBA, and I believe that god given athleticism has value. I believe Whitmore can replace the role of Jamir Watkins this season, as Watkins served as a 3&D player for all of last season.

Whitmore has the athleticism and size to be a strong defender, but he lacks effort on the defensive end. Whitmore also has the three point shot to be one of Washington's best catch and shoot guys, but his poor shot diet affects that.

There's no denying that Whitmore has all the talent in the world, but he has got to evolve his game, put his ego aside and make a few sacrifices if he wants to be in Washington's rotation and future plans.
