The Washington Wizards still have a major roster decision to make this offseason ahead of Bilal Coulibaly's fourth season with the organization
The Washington Wizards are approaching training camp with a chance for the new and returning pieces to begin meshing together as head coach Brian Keefe eyes the chance to lead his team into the postseason for the first time in six years. Yet before then, general manager Will Dawkins will have a major question to answer with a deadline looming for one of the key pieces in the rotation.
All the offseason discussion previously centered around what the front office would ultimately do to resolve the ongoing chatter surrounding veteran forward Anthony Davis, whether it be a trade or new deal. Yet that situation ended with an expected in-season resolution, giving the Wizards room to focus on a strong start with preseason looming. While former Wizard Cam Whitmore was also an unresolved contract situation before being traded, then signing with the Denver Nuggets on a two-way deal, the status of Bilal Coulibaly drew much more intrigue given the former first round pick marked the first true decision for the front office to make.
Alongside Kyshawn George and Tre Johnson, the versatile French guard/forward is also in the mix to serve as the fifth starter where his value in the rotation has been clear. With an opportunity to lock down the defensive standout, the question now turns to what the front office opts to do with his long-term status -- and when a decision will come to fruition.
Coulibaly became extension eligible this summer with the deadline set for 6 PM ET on Oct. 19, two days prior to the start of the regular season. Yet after picking up his team option in each of the last two seasons, the clock is ticking for the front office to lock down the organization's first extension eligible rookie.
Coulibaly is coming off a season where he averaged 1.3 steals per game for the second consecutive season, while also eclipsing one steal per game for the first time in his career. His 121.2 defensive rating ranked ninth among all NBA players who played in at least 25 games and averaged at least 25 minutes per game in 2025-26. Coulibaly's prowess carves a clear role on a team that is prioritizing improved team defense ahead of 2026-27.
The question that would drastically boost Coulibaly's profile is the offensive production where, despite seven 20-point performances in year three, his 42.5% shooting from the field and 31.9% shooting from three ranked among the worst on the Wizards' 2025-26 roster. Coulibaly's upside as a 3-and-D wing is something that he can prove in year four with the Wizards, yet what that means for negotiations is what remains unanswered ahead of October.
