An unverified report surfaced on Sunday that the Washington Wizards are a wildcard contender for LeBron James, but is the possible move even realistic?
The Washington Wizards found themselves at the center of a social media frenzy on Sunday. Yet it had nothing to do with any current Wizard or even next month's NBA Draft.
A report surfaced that the Wizards have emerged as a wildcard contender in the LeBron James sweepstakes, pointing to the connection between Anthony Davis and James with Rich Paul representing both superstars. The same report also pointed to Trae Young, who enters the offseason with his own question to answer amid an expected contract extension, as a strong recruiter for the organization to help get two feet in from veteran Anthony Davis, who has made conflicting statements on his outlook and opinion of the organization in the months since arriving in DC.
Sami Haider of Yahoo Sports reported one week prior to the report that the Wizards should be considered a team that makes sense for James given he's someone who "could mentor rising talent while finishing his career in a fresh setting."
Still, how realistic is the possible free agent move?
It would mark a weird move for some in the fanbase when remembering the history, notably LeBron eliminating the Wizards in three consecutive postseasons highlighted by the infamous 'Crab Dribble.' But everyone would understand why the organization would make a move like this. The question is, could it actually happen?
While a potential Trae Young extension could lower the hit toward next year's cap, the Wizards enter the summer over $60 million under the cap with $34.3 million to the first apron and $47.3 million to the second apron. While the second apron may be a stretch for the Wizards, the front office could opt to dip into the first apron after emphasizing the commitment to becoming a more competitive team in 2026-27. Given James is coming off a $52 million cap hit this past season, a departure or two would likely need to materialize to avoid that second apron. Yet financially, it's a stretch for Washington and a move that would require a shakeup from the long-term plan.
It would be nonsensical to point out the logjam at the wing for a player like James given he's played the one through five during his career, while the chance for another future first ballot Hall of Famer to add to the experience around a young core would accelerate their development. It would also impact their minutes, notably Will Riley, Kyshawn George and Bilal Coulibaly.
If James opts for another team, the Cleveland Cavaliers make the most sense with a chance to close out his NBA career with the same franchise where it began and brought an NBA title to. Maybe a trade involving Anthony Davis could materialize if his tune never changes and he opts to play for an immediate title contender?
Maybe the latter is the more likely. Until then, Wizards fans can take solace in the idea that the organization is viewed more favorably around the league after closing the book on a miserable three-season stretch for the organization featuring a 50-196 record.
