Locked into a top-five pick, Washington weighs Darius Acuff Jr.’s scoring punch against defensive woes while considering high-stakes trade scenarios that could land established veteran stars.
With the NBA Draft Lottery looming, the Wizards anxiously awaiting their fate in the 2026 NBA Draft. The Wizards can pick no worse than five, which is something they've said gives them comfort.
The Athletic's recent piece, detailed by Josh Robbins and David Aldridge, offered some new insight on how the team would feel about drafting in certain spots.
Robbins said he believes the Wizards view Darius Acuff Jr. as a top-five prospect in this incoming class. With most of the belief that the consensus top four will be AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Cameron Boozer, and Caleb Wilson, Robbins believes Acuff would be the next best thing for the Wizards.
Acuff is an interesting prospect for the Wizards, but a slightly polarizing one. For a team that was near the bottom defensively last season, it becomes a bit more difficult to see the vision that the 6-foot-2 point guard would be their best option. Acuff was one of the most talented offensive players in the nation this season, averaging 23.5 points and 6.4 assists.
However, defensively, his ability has looked questionable, with his effort wavering at times. Whether or not that is an issue at the next level remains to be seen, but the acquisition of Trae Young could complicate the pick. Acuff is a ball dominant guard, which would make Young and him seeing the floor together probably unlikely.
Jake Fischer reported last weekend the expectation is Young and the Wizards agree to a contract extension this summer. Bottom line, the Wizards would prefer to pick closest to the top of the draft as possible, but there's six potential stars in the class, according to the report.
Aldridge offered a scenario that included the Wizards landing the fifth pick, and actually trading back.
Still, if I were Washington, and picking fifth, I’d at least think about moving the pick, as the Wizards did in 2004, when they traded the fifth pick to the Mavericks in a multi-player deal that brought Antawn Jamison to Washington. Teams that want/need point guards would likely try to get in here to take either Acuff or Flemings, if they’re still on the board," Aldridge writes.
He entertained a scenario where Washington could trade back with New Orleans, who does not own their first round pick this year. Aldridge wondered if the Wizards could have interest in acquiring Trey Murphy III. However, this would require them to move a young asset such as potentially Kyshawn George, Bilal Coulibaly, or Will Riley.
Either way, the Wizards are guaranteed to pick in the top five, which should leave them a chance to land an extremely talented player. The lottery is at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. IF the results tilt in Washington's favor, it could completely change the future of the Wizards' franchise.
