Washington Wizards forward Anthony Davis is a reported top target for the Golden State Warriors in trade talks

With the 2026 NBA Draft officially wrapped up, attention has started to turn to the next stage of the acquisition phase of the offseason with free agency set to begin on Tuesday, June 30. Yet it's also led to rumors swirling around the league in the meantime, which of course included the Washington Wizards once again after Anthony Davis was linked to yet another report with interest elsewhere.

Kevin O'Connor of Yahoo Sports reported on Sunday that the Golden State Warriors are looking to not only trade for Anthony Davis, but also sign LeBron James in free agency. It would mark a seismic shift not just for the Wizards, but also across the league if both veteran superstars were to pair with Steph Curry ahead of likely one last push for a title run. Yet it would also mark a significant pivot for the Wizards amid months of continued rumors and speculation about the star forward's future.

Jimmy Butler is viewed as a necessary piece in a potential trade for Davis given he's on an expiring $57 million deal, though what the veteran's fit and role would be is unclear given the Wizards are filled with wings and days removed from drafting AJ Dybantsa with the first overall pick. Yet news of Draymond Green declining his player option for next season broke on Monday morning, adding more fuel to the fire about a possible move.

While the Lakers also reportedly have yet to offer James a contract extension ahead of uncertainty about his plans for where he will play in 2026-27, the latest report on Davis comes roughly one month before the Washington Wizards have the window open to begin extension negotiations. General manager Will Dawkins has been consistent ever since the front office acquired Davis from the Dallas Mavericks that the ten-time All Star is a key part of the vision for the future, though there's been inconsistencies as to whether Davis views himself in a similar standing.

After first noting the Wizards' struggles and outside perception as reason for concern at the time of the trade, Davis has changed his tune at times with others pointing to the forward being interested in becoming a cornerstone piece for the franchise. Though that talk picked up around the same time that the front office agreed to a four year deal worth approximately $212 million with point guard Trae Young, whether an extension with Davis does materialize ahead of the 2026-27 regular season opener is one remaining storyline for Dawkins and the Wizards to address.

Anthony Davis and the Wizards are eligible to begin contract talks on Thursday, August 6 with all eyes on how talks develop - or whether a trade does come to fruition in the end.
