There's been a player all fall camp who has been catching the eye of Alabama defensive coordinator, Kane Wommack. And now, he has fully grabbed the brass ring.

The Alabama Crimson Tide just made an intriguing decision for their defense.

But if you asked defensive coordinator Kane Wommack, it wasn't much of a decision at all.

Sophomore linebacker Luke Metz was just announced as the team’s starting weakside linebacker, otherwise known as the “STING” position, next to Caleb Woodson.

"Luke Metz is really our other starter right now," Wommack announced on Wednesday. “He’s got a little bit of a field general presence. When you watch him on game day, watch the way he communicates out there, the way he points things out, plays with anticipation. It’s the way you want a linebacker to play the game, right? The best production always comes from a defense that can anticipate what is coming next, right? And he has greatly improved in that regard.

Originally, it had seemed like linebacker QB Reese had the inside track for the starting position. However, during fall camp, the buzz surrounding Metz was palpable.

“Luke has always been a guy that, when you watch his tape, the energy that he plays with, the passion he plays with, and the physicality,” Wommack said earlier this month. “He took strides as we moved into spring ball, and then you saw that through the summer time, and right now he’s playing at a very high level. Excited about him.”

That excitement turned into trust.

Metz, originally a four-star recruit in the 2025 class, made a significant jump up the depth chart. But the one thing that made him stand out to the coaching staff was his understanding of the process.

"I feel like I am really going to embrace being at the bottom of the totem pole and have to work and work and work,” he said weeks prior to signing with Alabama. “I think I have always been one who rises to the occasion. It's definitely going to be the hardest thing I have ever done. It's going to be cool to see myself rise to the occasion."

The arrival of Metz takes a huge burden off Wommack’s shoulders.

When the Tide lost linebacker Justin Jefferson to the NFL this offseason, replacing his production was going to be a tall task.

While Metz may not be there just yet, having a veteran like Woodson beside him could help accelerate his development.

For someone who enjoys rising to the occasion, it doesn’t seem farfetched to believe that Metz can get there.
