The Alabama Crimson Tide may have unlocked a new deadly weapon during their win over Kentucky.
The Alabama Crimson Tide are coming off of a fantastic second half in their win over the Kentucky Wildcats, outscoring Kentucky 32-0 over the final 30 minutes for a 45-17 victory.
Yes, the first half was a bit messy, but Alabama certainly took care of business, and a big part of that was wide receiver Rico Scott.
Scott logged three catches for 44 yards and a touchdown in the win, marking his strongest performance at Alabama to date.
The junior receiver arrived at Tuscaloosa in 2024 and did not receive much playing time over his first couple of seasons. He amassed a grand total of 16 catches for 158 yards throughout that span, and he had to fight to win the No. 3 receiver job behind Ryan Coleman-Williams and Lotzeir Brooks in fall camp.
Scott ended up beating out Derek Meadows for the role, and now, the explosive weapon is flashing his potential.
Over the first two games of the year, Scott has caught five grabs for 65 yards and a score, and while that doesn't sound like much, he is already nearing career highs in both stats. Plus, the way the Crimson Tide utilized him against Kentucky is evidence that Kalen DeBoer and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb are becoming more comfortable with him.
Now, Scott is developing into a lethal playmaker for Alabama, and that comes after the receiver initially wanted to transfer out of the program back in January.
“Just to see him get that big play on the sideline and the opportunity to catch a touchdown, I know all the hard work that Rico has put in,” Grubb said. “And just his belief to stay and be here with us, with the Tide, is just exciting to see."
It's clear that Coleman-Williams and Brooks are the top dogs for 'Bama, and Meadows is in the mix, as well. Then there's also freshman Cederian Morgan, who doesn't have a catch just yet, but will almost certainly get an opportunity at some point this season.
But it seems patently obvious that Scott has made a strong impression on the coaching staff and is already developing a rapport with Keelon Russell, which spells great news for the budding pass-catcher as the campaign progresses.
Alabama will host Florida State this Saturday, and it would hardly be surprising to see Scott take yet another step forward.
