Alabama Gymnastics Defends Coleman Coliseum, Defeats Kentucky to Stay Perfect at Home cover image

Crimson Tide battled adversity, delivering a historic bars rotation and sweeping individual titles to maintain their perfect home record against Kentucky.

There’s something special about competing inside Coleman Coliseum, and once again Alabama gymnastics proved that Friday night.

The No. 3 Crimson Tide protected their home floor and took down No. 22 Kentucky with a 197.200-196.675 victory, keeping Alabama undefeated at home this season.

While the final score shows a strong win, the night was really about this team responding to adversity and continuing to show the fight that has defined this season.

The highlight of the night came on the uneven bars, where Alabama delivered one of the best rotations in program history. The Tide posted a massive 49.600, a season high that now stands tied for the fourth-highest bars score Alabama has ever recorded. It’s also one of the top scores in the country this year, showing just how dangerous this lineup can be when it’s clicking.

Alabama also swept every individual event title on the night.

Chloe LaCoursiere continued her incredible season, claiming the bars title with a near-perfect 9.975 while also adding a 9.925 on beam. Azaraya Ra-Akbar had a huge night of her own, winning vault with a 9.975 and taking the floor title after an electric 9.950 routine that brought the crowd inside Coleman Coliseum to its feet.

Because Alabama did not have a gymnast compete in all four events, Kentucky’s Delaynee Rodriguez took the all-around title with a 39.500.

Even in a win, head coach Ashley Johnston made it clear the Tide knows there is still work to do.

She explained that the team had a few uncharacteristic mistakes throughout the meet, including a counted fall on beam that cost the team five tenths, but what impressed her most was how the gymnasts responded. Instead of letting the moment snowball, Alabama regrouped, leaned on one another and finished strong.

That resilience showed up in a big way in the final rotations. Alabama’s floor lineup brought energy back into the arena, and the bars team followed with the kind of performance that reminded everyone why this group is one of the most talented squads in the country.

At this point in the season, perfection isn’t the goal.

Growth is.

Johnston emphasized that this team prides itself on being “the best at getting better,” and that mentality is what continues to push Alabama forward as postseason gymnastics approaches.

The Tide may not have had a flawless night, but they showed toughness, responded when it mattered, and once again defended their home arena.

And if this team continues to clean up the small mistakes, the ceiling for Alabama gymnastics is incredibly high.

Roll Tide.
