Alabama ignites with season-high road score against No. 1 Oklahoma, showcasing breakthrough performances and undeniable championship contention.
Friday night in Norman didn’t end with a win on the scoreboard, but it did send a message.
The No. 4 Alabama gymnastics team went toe-to-toe with the nation’s top-ranked squad and walked out of Lloyd Noble Center with its highest road score of the season, posting a 197.475 in a thrilling showdown with the Oklahoma Sooners. Oklahoma edged the Tide 198.200-197.475, but Alabama left little doubt that it belongs in the same conversation as the best teams in the country.
This meet had the feel of postseason gymnastics from the opening rotation.
The environment was loud.
The pressure was real.
And Alabama responded.
The highlight of the night came on floor exercise, where the Crimson Tide delivered one of its strongest rotations of the season. Alabama posted a 49.525 on floor, its second-highest rotation score this year, showing confidence, composure, and grit on the road against the No. 1 team in America.
Freshman Azaraya Ra-Akbar continued her breakout season in a big way. Competing with poise well beyond her years, she delivered career-best performances on both vault and floor, earning 9.950s on each. Her vault score was good enough to share the event title, and her floor routine brought energy and precision exactly when Alabama needed it most.
Chloe LaCoursiere also had a standout night, returning to the all-around lineup for the first time this season, and making it count. The junior All-American once again showed her consistency on uneven bars, posting her fifth straight score of 9.925 or higher. She shared the bars title and finished with a career-high 39.425 in the all-around, providing a huge boost to Alabama’s lineup depth moving forward.
What stood out most wasn’t just the numbers, it was the fight. Alabama stayed locked in from start to finish, continuing to build on a trend of steady improvement week after week. This team has lived in the mid-197 range consistently, and now the focus is clear: finding those extra tenths that separate great teams from championship contenders.
This was a road test.
A pressure test.
And Alabama passed it.
The Crimson Tide didn’t leave Norman discouraged, it left motivated, confident, and closer to where it wants to be when postseason arrives.
If Friday night was any indication, Alabama gymnastics is knocking loudly on the door of the nation’s elite, and it’s only a matter of time before it breaks through.
