Keelon Russell’s four-touchdown performance and a relentless defense fueled the Crimson Tide’s most complete victory yet, silencing a raucous Starkville crowd and preserving an undefeated SEC start.

Alabama went into Starkville on Saturday facing its biggest test of the young season, and the Crimson Tide answered emphatically.

No. 7 Alabama defeated No. 16 Mississippi State 56-23 inside Davis Wade Stadium, improving to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in SEC play while handing the Bulldogs their first loss of the season. Alabama scored 14 points in every quarter and finished with 483 yards of total offense in what became its most complete performance of the season.

And while there are certainly things Alabama can clean up, this felt like a statement.

Mississippi State entered Saturday 4-0, nationally ranked and playing at home with one of the most talked-about young quarterbacks in college football in Kamario Taylor. This was supposed to be Alabama's first major measuring stick of the season.

Instead, Alabama walked into Starkville and looked like the better football team for the overwhelming majority of the afternoon.

Keelon Russell continues to look more comfortable every week.

The young Alabama quarterback completed 16 of 22 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns while adding another touchdown on the ground. Russell finished with 301 total yards and four touchdowns, including an impressive 17-yard rushing score.

What continues to impress me most about Russell is not simply the arm talent. We knew he had that.

It is his composure.

Playing an undefeated ranked opponent on the road in the SEC is different than playing at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Davis Wade was loud. The cowbells were going. Mississippi State had plenty of confidence entering this game.

Russell never looked overwhelmed by the moment.

He made throws downfield, extended plays with his legs and continued showing why Alabama fans have every reason to be excited about what his future could look like.

But Saturday was not just about Russell.

Alabama's offense continues to become more dangerous because defenses cannot focus on one player. Trae'shawn Brown rushed for 66 yards and two touchdowns, while EJ Crowell added 49 yards on only three carries. Rico Scott caught two touchdown passes, and Lotzeir Brooks led Alabama with 96 receiving yards on four catches.

That kind of balance is exactly what Alabama needs as the schedule becomes increasingly difficult.

Perhaps the biggest story, however, was Alabama's defense.

The Crimson Tide forced four Mississippi State turnovers, turning those takeaways into 21 points. Dijon Lee Jr. provided one of the biggest plays of the afternoon when he returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. Caleb Woodson also recorded an interception, while Alabama recovered two Mississippi State fumbles.

Alabama also recorded five sacks and nine tackles for loss, both season highs. Freshman Xavier Griffin led the Crimson Tide with nine tackles while adding a sack and a quarterback hurry.

That is the type of disruptive Alabama defense fans have been waiting to see.

Was everything perfect? No.

Alabama had some sloppy moments, particularly in the second quarter. Turnovers gave Mississippi State opportunities it probably would not have created otherwise, and there were still explosive plays surrendered through the air.

Against the best teams remaining on Alabama's schedule, those mistakes could become much more costly.

But there is also something encouraging about winning 56-23 on the road against the No. 16 team in the country and still walking away knowing there are things that can be corrected.

Alabama did not need to play a perfect football game to dominate a ranked SEC opponent.

That matters.

The Crimson Tide led 28-17 at halftime before continuing to pull away, scoring another 28 points in the second half while shutting Mississippi State out in the fourth quarter. Alabama ultimately scored two touchdowns in every single quarter.

That is consistency.

It is also another sign that this Alabama team may be developing into something special.

We have seen flashes throughout the first month of the season. We have seen Russell's talent. We have seen the potential of Alabama's defense. We have seen young players grow up quickly.

Saturday felt like one of the first times all of those pieces started coming together at the same time.

Alabama is now 5-0.

The Crimson Tide just went on the road and beat an undefeated, ranked SEC opponent by 33 points.

There will be bigger games. There will be tougher opponents. There will undoubtedly be adversity somewhere along the way.

But if Alabama continues improving from here, the Crimson Tide is going to be a very difficult team for anyone in the country to deal with.

Saturday in Starkville was not just another win.

It was Alabama reminding everyone that the Crimson Tide is very much in the conversation among the best teams in college football.

Roll Tide.
