Keelon Russell is a key X-Factor for the Crimson Tide this week.
The Alabama Crimson Tide have dropped two straight games entering this week, with the panic level reaching new heights around the program.
After a close loss to Georgia two weeks ago, the Crimson Tide were blown out by the Tennessee Volunteers a week ago. The entire Alabama team played poorly, leading to the large defeat at the hands of their SEC rivals.
Alabama will be taking on the Texas A&M Aggies this week at home, giving the team a chance to rebound from the losses. The Crimson Tide are frustrated by the performance from last week, and this will be a good opportunity to get back on track.
But for the team to make that happen, quarterback Keelon Russell has to get back to the basics. For the year, Russell has thrown for 1,746 with 12 touchdowns and four interceptions, but he struggled heavily against the Volunteers last week.
After the game against Tennessee a week ago, college football analyst Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report gave Russell a quarterback grade of "F" for his performance. As the team prepares for the upcoming contest against Texas A&M, Russell is going to have to play much more smoothly to get a win.
Russell finished the game against the Volunteers by throwing for 147 yards on 19-for-29 passes, without a touchdown pass and with two interceptions. On the ground, he rushed for six yards and one touchdown, taking 11 carries.
Alabama needs its star quarterback to bounce back this week, giving them a better chance to wion the game. Russell has played very well for most of the season, but there were concerns entering the year about his experience level.
His play against Tennessee saw those fears come to life, and it led to another loss for the Crimson Tide. But against the Aggies, Russell will have a chance to show who he is as a player.
Russell will be defined by how he bounces back from a tough performance much more than if he were to just have strong outings. The Crimson Tide want to see how Russell is mentally in situations like this, and it could help develop him into a better player going forward for the team.
If he can perform stronger this week, Alabama should have no problem taking care of the Aggies at home. Texas A&M has underperformed this year, and Alabama will try to grab the big win to get back on track.
Kickoff between Alabama and Texas A&M is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. PT/3:30 p.m. ET from Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.
