Ever since Ty Simpson entered the NFL Draft, the quarterback competition between Keelon Russell and Austin Mack has been the center of Alabama discourse.
ESPN’s Bill Connelly just released a list of the 40 most important players for this upcoming college football season, and the top name may surprise a lot of people.
Sitting at No. 1 is Alabama sophomore quarterback Keelon Russell.
Coming into this season, we still have no conclusive idea on who will be starting for the Alabama Crimson Tide.
It’s a two-man battle between Russell and longtime quarterback Austin Mack.
Mack has patiently waited his turn, possesses a deep understanding of the offense and has earned praise for his composure in the pocket.
Russell, on the other hand, has gamebreaking talent, with a missile of an arm, and raises the team’s ceiling.
Connelly believes Russell's development will ultimately determine Alabama's ceiling in 2026.
“Russell was one of 2025's top prospects and spent a redshirt year watching everything Ty Simpson had to do to carry the weakest Alabama offense in years to the College Football Playoff. Now he has to do the same with an even less proven skill corps and a brand-new offensive line… while Russell hasn't even officially won the job yet, he might be the only guy with the upside to drive this offense to solid heights. If he's not awesome, Alabama probably isn't either.”
When one user on X had questioned Connelly for picking someone who hasn’t started a game yet at No. 1, Connelly didn’t hold back.
“Or it just reveals what I think of Austin Mack…”
Connelly's comments also come as speculation continues to build that Russell may have the inside track to win Alabama's starting job.
Three weeks ago, Pete Nakos of On3 believes that Alabama’s best option would be to stick with the former five-star recruit.
"For all the experience Austin Mack has in the offense, the excitement Keelon Russell brings to the field is difficult to tamp down. The former five-star recruit's dual-threat ability caught everyone's attention at A-Day," Nakos said.
In limited action last season, Russell completed 11 of 15 passes for two touchdowns while appearing in two games during garbage time.
Fall camp, which starts today, will be crucial for Russell this season, as he and Mack will go toe-to-toe for the starting position.
