Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Keelon Russell struggled against Kentucky on Saturday, but it isn't cause for alarm.

The Alabama Crimson Tide came away with a 45-17 win over the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday, but it wasn't as easy as the score indicates.

Alabama was actually behind 17-13 at halftime, and much of that was due to Keelon Russell's struggles.

Russell went 8-for-11 with 123 yards in the first half, which looks solid. But then you figure that he threw two interceptions (including a pick-six) and lost a fumble.

It wasn't a good opening half for Russell in his first taste of SEC play, and it wasn't like the Crimson Tide were playing Georgia. They were facing Kentucky.

Immediately, some Alabama fans were calling for Russell to be benched as Kalen DeBoer's squad appeared to be headed for yet another brutal (and familiar) road loss.

But Russell proceeded to settle down in the second half, and while he wasn't brilliant, going 8-for-12 with 65 yards and a touchdown, he managed the game and didn't make any glaring mistakes.

So while Russell's awful first half may be cause for alarm for some, it shouldn't be. Why? Because he's a redshirt freshman who had virtually no experience before 2026, and he is playing in the toughest conference in college football.

Instead of perceiving Russell's issues against Kentucky as "struggles," we should be viewing them as growing pains.

The former five-star recruit needed this in order to move forward. Wouldn't you rather he takes his lumps in a win over Kentucky now rather than in a loss to Georgia later?

Now, if Russell continues to labor next week against Florida State and the following game versus South Carolina, then maybe Alabama fans can truly start to worry. But for now, Tuscaloosa should just chalk it up to jitters and inexperience.

Lexington provided a hostile road environment for Russell and the Crimson Tide, and that was very evident over the first 30 minutes. It wasn't just Russell. Alabama as a whole looked a bit flustered, and its offensive line was getting overwhelmed.

Fortunately, everything seemed to slow down for 'Bama in the second half, which allowed Russell to get more comfortable.

You can't possibly look at Russell's stat line and come away impressed, but it's games like this that will build his character and help him overcome adversity in the latter stages of the season when the pressure becomes even more significant.
