This four-star Alabama Crimson Tide transfer addition just saw his importance increase significantly.

The Alabama Crimson Tide added some very interesting pieces to their defensive line in the transfer portal, and perhaps none were more intriguing than former USC Trojans standout Devan Thompkins.

A four-star transfer, Thompkins decided to take his talents to Alabama even though the Crimson Tide had a deep rotation in the trenches led by London Simmons and Jeremiah Beaman. But now, Thompkins' opportunity has grown significantly.

Why? Because Beaman has been ruled out for the season with a knee injury, marking the second straight injury-plagued campaign for the former top recruit.

Alabama added three defensive tackles in the portal, also nabbing Oregon's Terrance Green and Mississippi State's Kedrick Jones-Bingley. So the Crimson Tide were definitely prepared. But it's hard not to like what Thompkins in particular brings to the table.

The 6-foot-5, 300-pound lineman is coming off of a very strong 2025 campaign in which he registered 31 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. It was a breakout season for Thompkins, and he achieved it against strong Big Ten competition.

Thompkins has the versatility to slide up and down the defensive line, featuring both as a potential run stopper and a pass rusher. He probably excels a bit more in the latter area, but he is good enough to take care of both fronts.

Expect Alabama to use Thompkins in a variety of ways this year, especially with Beaman now sidelined for all of 2026.

Thompkins has been very impressive for the Crimson Tide in fall camp and has already caught the eye of defensive coordinator Kane Wommack, who praised the fifth-year senior's skillset and athleticism earlier in the month.

Again, it's not like Thompkins transferred over from a small school, either. He is coming over from a very rugged conference, so he should have no problem transitioning in the SEC.

It will definitely be interesting to see how Alabama handles Thompkins' snap counts with so much talent and depth along the defensive front, but it would not be surprising if Thompkins ends up separating himself from the pack.

The injury to Beaman was deflating for sure, but the Crimson Tide came prepared, and Thompkins seems more than ready to step into a more prominent role.
