Dolphins GM hints at a major decision for Tua Tagovailoa. New leadership plans to bring in competition, potentially reshaping Miami's QB future.

Dolphins GM Gets Brutal on Former Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa's NFL Future

The Miami Dolphins could be moving on from former Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in the offseason.

Tagovailoa was benched during the final three games of the season for Miami. Former Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers earned the starting job at the end of the season, leading to questions about Tagovailoa's future in the league.

Following the season, the Dolphins made a surprise change at head coach, firing Mike McDaniel after going 7-10 in 2025.

Miami's change in leadership includes bringing in new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and head coach Jeff Hafley, both of whom worked with the Green Bay Packers last season.

During a recent interview on the SoFlo Sports Show, Sullivan said the team was getting close to making a decision on Tagovailoa and wanted to bring in competition to potentially replace him, a brutal message for the former first-round pick.

"But we're getting close to a decision," Sullivan said, via a transcription from NFL Media. "And when we do, we'll let Tua know whether he's going to be part of this or not, and we'll move forward.

"But you can rest assured that we will add competition to that room, one way or the other, to make it the best that we can."

Sullivan is planning to look at other quarterbacks in the draft. It would be interesting if Sullivan looked at Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson as a possible draft pick for Miami.

The Dolphins have been upfront with Tagovailoa about where he stands this offseason.

" But, look, I've had -- Tua was in my office the other day, if I'm being perfectly frank," Sullivan said. "We had a great conversation. Tua has been a very good player in this league. He's done a lot of really good things for the Miami Dolphins.

"You guys should be proud to have him and having had him. I don't know what the future holds right now, and I told Tua that. We're working through some things. What I can tell you is that we're going to infuse competition into that room."

Tagovailoa has thrown for 18,166 yards, 120 touchdowns and 59 interceptions since he entered the league in 2020.
