Late-game turnovers and a costly avoidable sack derailed the former Alabama star's preseason performance, leaving the Seahawks rookie searching for consistency before the final roster cuts.
Former Alabama and current Seattle Seahawks quarterback Jalen Milroe played all of the second half in the preseason game against the Tennessee Titans.
Needless to say, it got ugly.
Milroe finished the night completing six out of 11 passes for 52 yards, took two sacks, and threw two interceptions.
Two plays in particular stood out.
The sack was on a play where the Seahawks were looking to answer a Titans touchdown that had put them behind for the first time all game.
One thing led to another, and the Seahawks were staring at a 4th and 3 with 4:48 left on the clock.
That’s when Milroe took an avoidable sack.
He had plenty of time in the pocket, branched out to his right to extend the play, but instead of taking off with his legs or throwing it, Mohamoud Diabate and Truman Jones sacked him.
It seemed like the game was over, until the Seahawks’ defense stuffed Tennessee on 4th down at the Seattle 8, giving Milroe a chance to redeem himself.
However, it had only led to an interception on the first play of the drive.
As he dropped back into his own end zone, he felt pressure and went to his right. While running, he tossed to former Alabama WR Emmanuel Henderson who was leaning one way.
The ball did not land where Henderson was leaning, giving Titans’ safety Derrick Canteen an interception, and ultimately ending the game.
After the game, Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald offered support to the former third-round pick.
“You say ‘two picks’ and it sounds a certain way, but let’s watch the tape and see what we can improve on there,” he told the media. “I know he’s upset, he’s disappointed, but he’s got a long way to go. He still has an opportunity to improve and take his game to another level, so let’s go focus on that.”
Seattle has been hoping to find ways to utilize Milroe’s athleticism, but if he continues to be reckless with the ball in his hands, it’s hard to justify even playing him.
It’s expected that he will be the third quarterback on the Seahawks depth chart behind Sam Darnold and Drew Lock, which was the case last season when the Seahawks won Super Bowl 60.
Milroe will get another opportunity during the Seahawks’ final preseason game on Friday, August 28 against the Kansas City Chiefs at 7:00 p.m. CT.
