Arkansas basketball preview: Florida Gators cover image

Arkansas' biggest SEC basketball test is important for NCAA Tournament seeding, but also as a measuring stick for this team

The Arkansas Razorbacks have arrived at the final day of February. On Saturday the 28th, they face the Florida Gators in their last pre-March basketball game. Yes, we've gotten that far into the season, and what better way to test a team before March than to travel to the home of the reigning national champions and 2026 SEC leaders?

Florida coach Todd Golden is showing why he's an elite sideline chessmaster in college basketball. Florida was not a good team early in the season, losing to TCU and other teams which plainly don't have as much talent as the Gators do. Florida's backcourt was struggling, most particularly Xaivian Lee. Golden had a mess on his hands. As the season unfolded, he found a way to clean it up. The backcourt got out of the way and became a source of help for an elite Florida frontcourt which has size, skill, power and length. Florida has gotten on a roll in SEC play and went from ordinary -- in mid-January -- to exceptional in mid-February and is in position to win the SEC basketball title.

Here comes Arkansas to Gainesville to attempt to make a late-season statement. When the Hogs visited Alabama a week ago, they played one of the very best games of the 2026 college basketball season, losing 117-115 in double overtime. Is another classic about to unfold here? We will find out soon enough, but after UA failed to defend Alabama over the course of 50 minutes, it's clear the Hogs need to have a better, stronger defensive answer for a top SEC opponent.

With Darius Acuff -- a superstar in his freshman season -- running the show, the Arkansas offense has been extremely difficult to contain. Arkansas scoring a bunch of points is a likely outcome anytime the Hogs take the floor. Most of the battle -- and challenge -- for John Calipari this season has come at the defensive end of the floor, and also on the glass. Arkansas can't get beaten up by Florida on the backboards. The Hogs have to play even or very close to it in that aspect of competition.

Arkansas has to demonstrate good positioning and fundamentals against Florida's frontcourt strength. The Hogs haven't gone up against many elite frontcourts this season, but UF certainly has one of them. This isn't likely to be the pure racehorse game the Bama battle was, but it's still going to be a severe test of Arkansas' ability to hold the fort on defense and enable the offense to win the game.
