Arkansas basketball never had a championship defense in 2026. That's why the Hogs are going home.
The Arkansas Razorbacks are going home. Their stay in the Western United States and the West Region is over. After spending several days in Portland and then going to San Jose, the Razorbacks will fly back to Fayetteville. They will not make the Final Four or the Elite Eight. They had to settle for the Sweet 16 because Arizona was in a higher weight class ... and because the Hogs just weren't an elite defensive team in 2026. Arizona's easy win on Thursday night was not a revelation. It was a confirmation of what we saw through a lot of this season.
Arkansas was going to need to play its very best offensive game of the season in order to have any chance against Arizona, but that didn't mean UA could be less than great on defense. The Hogs had to max out there as well, and that's where they didn't even come remotely close. Arizona hung 54 on Arkansas in the first half, had 70 points at the 15-minute mark of the second half, and had 78 at the under-12-minute media timeout in the second half. That's simply not in the neighborhood of a quality standard or a winning level of performance.
You didn't have to look at a stat sheet to see or feel how easy it was for Arizona to score in this game. The Wildcats often dribbled the ball into the paint and simply didn't meet with any resistance. This was a layup line for Arizona, and Arkansas looked shaken, frozen, and fundamentally unprepared for the moment and the opponent.
Arkansas fans might be sad or frustrated with the outcome, but they shouldn't really be surprised. Arizona is a No. 1 seed, just like Florida, and Florida absolutely steamrolled Arkansas in a manner similar to what we saw in this Sweet 16 game. It was men against boys, the differential between the two teams considerable and evident.
John Calipari surely hoped his team could make some modest defensive improvements in this game and not get completely shredded, but that didn't happen. An Arkansas defense which wobbled many times in 2026 -- the road loss at Auburn, the road loss at Georgia, the Houston loss in New Jersey, and others -- did not have the sturdiness or resilience to withstand a fully functional Arizona attack.
Arkansas' limitations caught up with the team on Thursday. The Hogs' Final Four drought now increases to 32 years. Hopefully it won't go beyond that.
