Darius Acuff has been a legitimate college basketball superstar as an Arkansas freshman. What will he be able to do against Florida, the defending national champion?

Arkansas basketball is preparing to play the Florida Gators on Saturday in what can reasonably be called the game of the 2026 SEC basketball season. Florida is and should be favored, but Arkansas gets its big chance to not only prove it belongs in the Final Four contender conversation, but to make one last push at the SEC basketball championship. As UA goes to Gainesville, all eyes are on Darius Acuff, the point guard who has arguably been the best freshman in the country.

While most experts would say that Duke's Cameron Boozer is the best freshman in the country -- a point which carries a certain amount of weight, given that Duke beat Arkansas earlier in the season -- one can make an entirely reasonable claim that Acuff is the top freshman in the United States. The argument begins with his incredible 49-point, 1-turnover, 50-minute marathon masterpiece in Arkansas' 117-115 double-overtime loss to Alabama. Has anyone -- Boozer very much included -- played a better game against a quality opponent than that?

Darius Acuff has been the paragon of offensive efficiency. He's not throwing up 7-of-23 shooting lines. He's often shooting at a high percentage while getting to the free throw line and minimizing turnovers and playing extended minutes. He's checking nearly every possible box and is doing so on a consistent basis.

If you were to ask NBA draft experts about the loaded upcoming class, Darius Acuff has very likely made himself a top-five pick with his season. AJ Dybantsa is probably the one prospect who is clearly better and more trustworthy than Acuff. After that, it's an open debate. Darryn Peterson of Kansas has a high ceiling, but his strange decisions to check out of the lineup in games this season should rightly cause a lot of concern for NBA teams. Boozer is a legitimate top-five pick who might go higher than Acuff if an NBA team feels it has to go to the frontcourt, but in terms of best overall player, there's a solid case to make that Darius Acuff is the best non-Dybantsa player on the board.

Now we arrive at the Florida game. If Darius Acuff can bring the hammer against the defending national champion Gators, he will affirm his top-five NBA draft pick status and make a solid claim to a top-three slot. Much more importantly -- and of greater relevance to Arkansas basketball fans -- the Hogs will have a great chance to win if Acuff brings his A-game to Gainesville. It's the kind of stage and opportunity a great player covets.

Let's see what Darius Acuff can do when the lights are bright. Recent history tells us he won't disappoint.
