What you can see from this poll is that 12 SEC baseball teams are in the top 25. That's crazy, but it's something SEC baseball fans know well: This is the best college baseball conference in America, easily the deepest and toughest conference to navigate week in and week out. SEC play hasn't even started yet, either, so the road is just beginning and will become a lot tougher as the season rolls along.
All of this affirms the need for Arkansas and other SEC baseball teams to really clean up in nonconference play, giving them some margin for error when the SEC schedule begins. If teams want a high seed in early June, they will need to minimize mistakes and make sure they give themselves room for a bumpy two-week stretch in SEC play -- nothing more than that, but at least something to cushion the blow.
The reality of seeing 12 SEC baseball teams in the top 25 also emphasizes the point that if Arkansas and other SEC teams can merely be top-four in the conference, that should translate to a high NCAA Tournament seed and very likely a national seed with home field advantage for the regionals. Winning the SEC would be a tremendous accomplishment for the team which ultimately gets the job done, but simply being in the top tier of the conference -- and all the league wins that should mean -- will very likely lead to preferred placement in the NCAA Tournament bracket, thereby smoothing the path to Omaha.
Arkansas has a lot of rough edges to iron out as it continues with its season. Seeing 11 fellow SEC baseball teams in the top 25 is a reminder that the Hogs have to keep improving, because they know there's a lot of elite competition they will have to face before too long.
