Let's be willing to call it as we see it and not pretend otherwise: The euphoria of winning the SEC Tournament was dampened for Arkansas by the revelation of its bracket path at the 2026 NCAA Tournament. Some teams will look at their bracket and see its deficiencies but understand that the path was never going to be easy. Other teams will think they got the perfect bracket. Other teams will feel they were absolutely shafted and wronged on a large scale. Arkansas and its fans will feel the latter, and they won't be wrong. This was -- and is -- pure absurdity.
Just how bad was -- and is -- this bracket for Arkansas? Where do we begin?
First of all, Arkansas won the SEC Tournament on a Sunday and is now being shipped to a Thursday-Saturday site with minimal time to rest and recover. Second, Arkansas' already-small time window for turning around to play in the NCAA Tournament is limited even more by the fact that the Hogs will have to commute a long distance. They will go to Portland for this game and weekend. Third, Arkansas fans will have a comparatively tougher time going to Portland than other locations.
We're not even close to being done here. Arkansas, as a 4 seed, drew the toughest 5 seed in the second round. Wisconsin beat Michigan earlier this season and nearly beat the Wolverines -- a No. 1 seed -- a second time this past weekend in the Big Ten Tournament. It's a brutal Round of 32 draw. Arkansas is in Arizona's bracket, giving the Razorbacks arguably the toughest Sweet 16 draw of any No. 4 seed in the field. Arkansas would have to play Arizona in San Jose -- if, of course, the Hogs are even able to get that far.
We're still not finished. The Hogs have all these disadvantages in their bracket in spite of winning their conference tournament. Compare Arkansas being given a horrible bracket for winning the SEC Tournament with -- on the other hand -- Purdue getting a No. 2 seed for winning the Big Ten Tournament. Virginia didn't even win the ACC Tournament but still got a No. 3 seed. Florida got hammered in the SEC semifinals but still got a No. 1 seed.
This stinks. Arkansas earned a closer geographical placement. It earned a Friday-Sunday bracket to offer needed recovery time. It deserved an easier second-round matchup as well.
This was a brutal bracket and not at all a reward for winning the SEC Tournament. Selection Sunday feels like Christmas for a lot of basketball fans, but Arkansas received a lump of coal in its stocking.
