This Arkansas basketball team really gets after it
Sure, it's only Arkansas-Pine Bluff. It was only a cupcake game. No one should overreact to one game against a small school at the start of the season. However, one thing seems clear about this Arkansas basketball team for 2026-2027: It has a lot of energy to burn.
It's hard not to fall in love with this team, even though the season is so young. The journey has barely begun, but it already seems clear this group is going to fly into the passing lanes, get deflections and steals, throw windmill dunks, push the ball on the fast break, and create up-tempo basketball whenever and wherever it can. If opponents want to beat this team, slowing down a game and creating a grinding halfcourt slog is probably the way to go... but good luck doing that.
In the 106-61 win over Pine Bluff, we saw why this team has such a high ceiling and can evolve into something special: Arkansas can create offense from its defense. It can do so at a level last season's team was unable to achieve. This group is so active on defense that it will collect steals and run the floor in the opposite direction for a dunk or layup. Arkansas forced 24 Pine Bluff turnovers, 16 of them being steals. The thing about steals is that they are live-ball turnovers for the opposing offense. Teams can't run the fast break off a dead-ball turnover, when a bad pass goes out of bounds and requires an inbound pass after a whistle. Live-ball turnovers, on the other hand, are the best possible catalyst for fast-break opportunities and buckets. It's a big part of how Arkansas scored 106 points.
The other key piece to mention about the energy and intensity of this Arkansas team is that John Calipari has real depth. No one played more than 28 minutes in this game, and nine Razorbacks played at least 16 minutes, with a 10th player, Caleb Ourigou, playing nine minutes. That's 10 players getting more than a cup of coffee in one game. No one is being overextended. Lots of players are getting a chance to show what they can do. This is what will keep the team fresh throughout the season.
Arkansas basketball is all about energy. The youthfulness of the team, combined with its depth, will lead to a lot of game nights with nine or 10 hungry Hogs scrambling across the court. If anyone gets tired, a fresh body is right there to replace him and go full-tilt. It's exciting to see a team play this way, because if this can be sustained, it will be hard for opponents to withstand all this effort and electricity for 40 full minutes.
