Arkansas basketball gives everyone a happy break from football

There will be plenty of analysis on Arkansas basketball's exhibition win over Gonzaga. We'll look at the stat sheet, the minutes, the lineup combinations, how the team looked on the court, and more. For now, though, let's just stop and take a deep breath and give thanks. Basketball gave everyone in the state of Arkansas a blessed interruption of a football season which has created a lot of frustration and anger. For one Saturday in autumn, the discussion in the state was not about Hunter Yurachek or Ryan Silverfield or the offensive line or the NIL budget. On this Saturday, the conversation surrounded John Calipari and his top-10-caliber team which has a chance to be really good. The talk after the game touched on some of the injury worries facing this team, but it also dealt with the big run the Hogs used to shift the trajectory of the contest and come away with a 76-72 win over Gonzaga.

As it turns out, the injury fears Arkansas fans might have had during this game did not become reality afterward. John Calipari was able to address the media and say that the three instances of players being helped off the court - Jordan Smith Jr., Miikka Muurinen, and Cooper Bowser - were all cases of cramps, nothing more. Thank goodness. That should add to a feeling of gratitude among Arkansans of all ages. The health of this team is fundamentally intact. Nothing got derailed against Gonzaga. The afternoon in Bud Walton Arena was enthusiastic, celebratory, and optimistic, the complete opposite of nearly everything the fan base feels about the football program.

Arkansas fans have endured a miserable series of Saturdays over the past several weeks of the 2026 football season. How refreshing to come to an athletic facility and not dread what was about to unfold. How different to look at a team and know that the height of its ceiling, not the depth of its floor, was the main point of intrigue. How liberating it is to think of the possibility of competing for a national championship instead of competing to avoid the SEC basement.

Arkansas might have the 15th-best football team in the 2026 SEC, with only one team being worse than the Razorbacks. In basketball, it is the exact opposite, with the Hogs looking like the second-best team in the conference. Only preseason No. 1 Florida is expected to be better than Calipari's crew in the coming SEC season.

We'll get to the analysis soon enough, but for one day, just give thanks that basketball is back and that football doesn't have to completely dominate the conversation for the next several months in Fayetteville and the rest of the state of Arkansas.
