This is the time for the Hogs to play a solid road game

The Auburn Tigers are not a particularly good team, but they are better than the Vanderbilt Commodores - they beat Vandy earlier this SEC season. If the Arkansas football team is going to grab a road SEC win this year, this Saturday is the time. Arkansas won't have a better chance to win an SEC game or a road game than in Nashville, against a Commodore crew which has fallen back to the bottom echelon of the SEC. There's no Diego Pavia to ride to the rescue. There's no supporting cast strong enough to lift Vanderbilt to the rare heights it attained last season. Vanderbilt is starting over. Arkansas has to pounce if it wants to get the conference win and the road win which will offer at least a small shred of optimism for the future under Ryan Silverfield.

Arkansas had nothing to offer beyond the first several minutes in its road loss at Utah. The Hogs were completely flat in their road loss at Texas A&M. Arkansas has played six games so far this season, four at home. UA's 2-4 record would be depressing and discouraging in just about any set of circumstances, but one reason it's a bitter pill to swallow for Razorback fans is that the schedule has been home-heavy thus far. If the Hogs want to compensate for some of their stumbles, a road win in Nashville would do the trick.

The Arkansas checklist for victory at Vandy is not complicated, and it is nothing you don't already know about. First of all, KJ Jackson can't throw a first-quarter interception which sets up the opponent for points and gets the home crowd involved against the Razorbacks. Arkansas needs to keep the crowd quiet on the road and make it through the first half relatively even on the scoreboard, setting up a 60-minute game. Arkansas hasn't yet been competitive for a full 60 minutes in a road game. It's time to start showing more backbone away from Fayetteville.

Second, the run game which briefly flourished in the third quarter against Tennessee needs to show up against Vanderbilt. Arkansas played the third quarter versus the Vols the way it needs to play every quarter. Being able to replicate the season's best quarter of football must be a central aspiration for UA. The Hogs have to at least come close to achieving it.

Third, UA can't give up splash plays on defense. The Hogs were very good on defense against Tennessee, but two plays which gained 127 yards for the Vols led to 14 points and proved to be decisive. Not allowing home runs - limiting Vandy to a few doubles and nothing more - is another essential part of an SEC road victory.
