It makes a real difference if Arkansas wins four games instead of three
The reality of the situation at Arkansas football is something we can all acknowledge with open eyes. This team is highly unlikely to make a bowl game. It is hard to find three wins on the remainder of the schedule, and that's what the Razorbacks will need to clinch a postseason berth. We can all be honest with ourselves and say a bowl game is unlikely, matching preseason expectations for this team.
Some fans might reasonably say that if the Hogs can't make a bowl game, there's no real difference between a 3-9 or 4-8 season, and that a 5-7 record won't be enough to make this year feel satisfying. It's entirely understandable.
However, it's not the right approach to have with this team and program.
If we start by acknowledging that Arkansas doesn't have great football players up and down this 2026 roster, and that the investment made in the program by the athletic department has not been up to the standard we should want or expect for Razorback football, then it becomes a very big deal if this team can scratch out at least one if not two more wins. Getting to 4-8 matters. Getting to 5-7 would be significant. It wouldn't be transformative, necessarily, and we wouldn't have to embellish the circumstances and make wild claims about the program turning the corner or anything like that. However, it would be productive. It would be positive. It would be helpful.
Think of it this way: If Ryan Silverfield, with what we acknowledge is a mediocre roster (at best), can find four or five wins overall, which would mean two or three SEC wins, he will have lifted the program from the rock-bottom 2-10 Chad Morris/Sam Pittman level the program never wants to inhabit ever again. The more Silverfield can separate Arkansas from that 2-10 floor this season with a roster everyone knows isn't very good, it would create real optimism for what the program can achieve if major roster upgrades are produced in the coming offseason.
On one hand, 3-9 and 5-7 are the same in that they will both represent the failure to make a bowl game, but on the other hand, Arkansas winning three SEC games even in the midst of all the bad vibes circulating around the program would be quite an achievement. Moreover, with the College Football Playoff expanding to 24 teams, 9-3 becomes the target for Arkansas to make the playoff in future years. Getting to five wins instead of four or three puts UA that much closer to its target record. Every piece of real estate counts.
That's why 3-9 and 5-7 or 4-8 aren't the same in a larger and meaningful sense.
