Billy Richmond is improving at the right time of year for Arkansas. If he maintains this trajectory, the Razorbacks can become a tough out.

Darius Acuff rightly gets most of the headlines and national attention for Arkansas basketball. Acuff has played like a superstar as a freshman, and he is the main reason the Razorbacks are where they are. However, if UA is going to make a run in March Madness and challenge for a spot in the 2026 NCAA Final Four, Billy Richmond will be a core part of the effort.

Billy Richmond is stepping up at the right time of the season for Arkansas and coach John Calipari. Arkansas needs Richmond to be Robin to Acuff's Batman for this team to fully realize its potential. Right now, that's happening.

Going into Saturday's huge game at Florida, Richmond developed real momentum and demonstrated signs of clear and sustained progress. He scored 20 or more points in four straight games, noticeably raising his ceiling as player. Playing off Acuff and understanding how to be more effective and aggressive within Arkansas' fluid and potent offense, Richmond took a real step forward and gave this team real stability at the offensive end of the floor.

Wednesday against Texas A&M, Richmond led the Razorbacks with 23 points. More than that, he was 8 of 13 from the field, giving Calipari and the Hogs the level of precision they need. Richmond also got to the foul line six times and made all six free throw attempts. That's a display of both efficiency and balance, scoring in different ways but not giving away possessions. It was a mature and polished performance which helped Arkansas score 99 and win by 15.

When we stop and consider why Arkansas has been able to score 90 or more points and shoot 50 percent or better from the field in so many of its wins this SEC basketball season, Billy Richmond has been a big part of that reality. With the SEC Tournament and March Madness not that far away, Billy Richmond needs to maintain the higher level of play he has established.

Arkansas needs five or six players contributing, to be sure. It can't just be the Acuff-and-Richmond show. However, there will be games in March when teams do try to take Darius Acuff away and at least make a more robust effort to get the ball out of his hands and force someone else on the Arkansas roster to beat them. Billy Richmond might be the guy who has to answer the call more regularly than anyone else.
