A look at every SEC team's offseason did not paint the Hogs in a favorable light
Ryan Silverfield has some bulletin-board material to pass along to his Arkansas football players. ESPN recently came out with a piece which ranked all Power Four football programs' 2026 offseasons. Which went well? Which went poorly? How do they all stack up? ESPN put out a national top 10 and ranked every Power Four conference's teams. In the SEC subsection, ESPN ranked Arkansas' 2026 football offseason 16th -- dead last -- in the conference.
ESPN wrote this about what went wrong for the Hogs this offseason:
"Silverfield successfully overhauled a roster that finished 2-10 last fall, signing more than 60 newcomers for his debut season at Arkansas. But the Razorbacks also failed to retain a number of potential veteran returners who might have helped ease his transition in 2026, including offensive tackle E'Marion Harris (Oklahoma), and defensive linemen Ian Geffrard (Texas) and Justus Boone (Wisconsin). There's intrigue with quarterback AJ Hill, who followed Silverfield and Cramsey from Memphis, but the program features little experience under center between the former top-100 recruit and redshirt sophomore KJ Jackson. After returning wide receivers CJBrown and Jalen Brown, the Razorbacks are betting heavily on upside in the passing game between transfers Donovan Faupel (New Mexico State), Jamari Hawkins (Memphis), Chris Marshall (Boise State) and Jelani Watkins (LSU)."
Was it an amazing offseason for Arkansas? No, and we're not trying to suggest it was. However, Silverfield did bring a lot of players into the program to give himself and his coaching staff some depth pieces and some real options in terms of evaluating players and boosting UA's chances of identifying starter-level players.
No, we don't think Arkansas is on a meteoric rise, or that the Hogs are likely to make a bowl game this season. This is not a quick-fix situation in Fayetteville, so there's no attempt to create the impression the Hogs hit a home run this offseason.
We are merely pushing back against the idea that UA had the very worst offseason of any SEC program. That's crazy. It's ridiculous to say so.
Vanderbilt was playing in the big leagues, competing for a College Football Playoff spot last season. One could have argued the Commodores should have gotten in with a 10-2 record. Now VU is looking at a steep drop-off, losing not only Diego Pavia but a number of other proven players who were essential to last season's success. Vanderbilt is poised to be several games worse than in 2025. Arkansas is not in that same position. By that logic alone, it's basically impossible to put the Razorbacks lower than Vandy, but that's exactly what ESPN did.
Are we also going to say that Mississippi State had a better offseason than Arkansas? Where's evidence of that? MSU is a floundering program in its own right.
We're not saying Arkansas should be in the top 5 or even the top 8, but it's an absolute joke to put the Hogs at 16 instead of 13 or 12. Ryan Silverfield has motivational fuel if he wants to use it.
