John Calipari has the elite freshmen. He needs some experience to round out the roster.
John Calipari is getting closer to building a Final Four-caliber roster at Arkansas basketball for the 2026-2027 season. Pulling in five-star forward Miikka Muurinen makes the Hogs that much more talented. The move gives UA a frontcourt piece it certainly can use. If Meleek Thomas and/or Billy Richmond return, the Hogs will have that much more firepower and depth. If Arkansas was a top-10 team before the Muurinen recruitment, it might be a top-8 team now.
It's not yet a Final Four team. Not quite.
Cooper Bowser is a useful frontcourt player, but is he the anchor for a Final Four frontcourt? It doesn't seem to be the case. That's not a criticism of Bowser or, for that matter, Calipari. Bowser is a good fit for what Arkansas needs, but as a rotation player, not as a superstar. He's a very solid depth piece. He makes the roster better. He's just not a heavyweight the way Aday Mara was for Michigan. Not everyone is -- or can be -- Aday Mara.
Bowser is a positive piece to the puzzle, but John Calipari needs another savvy and accomplished big man to really put the finishing touches on the 2026-2027 Arkansas roster. The backcourt has the stud guards and the portal addition of high-scoring Jeremiah Wilkinson from Georgia. It's in the frontcourt where Arkansas -- despite the addition of Muurinen -- is still lacking if we are talking about a Final Four level of resources. Calipari is hoping multiple freshmen can do the job, but in March Madness, that's an especially risky approach.
Cooper Bowser is a hungry, active player but not a hugely physical presence. Calipari needs a smart, rugged big man with a little more beef and brawn who gives Arkansas real heft and force in the paint. It's not just about the body, but also the brain -- someone who is built but knows how to operate on the low block and near the rim.
The pieces are certainly coming together for Arkansas. The Muurinen recruitment adds to this team's potential and provides more of a frontcourt-backcourt balance. However, the lingering imbalance on this team -- especially at a time when Meleek Thomas and Billy Richmond have not yet decided on the NBA or Arkansas -- is between experience and inexperience. Freshmen will be asked to do a lot. Calipari needs to find a veteran who can take pressure off the freshmen by locking down defensive and rebounding responsibilities near the basket.
A top-8 team is better than top-10, but the Final Four standard hasn't yet been reached. One more move -- can John Calipari do it?
